Title: The Discipleship System

1
The Discipleship System
  • The Discipleship System controls the growth and
maturity of the people in the church

2
Symptoms of discipleship barrier
  • People dont keep changing and growing
  • People are not volunteering for ministries
  • People do not become generous in their giving
  • People do not study their Bible
  • People do not join small groups or classes
  • The church has NO goals for the individual,
marriage, the family, the church, or the
    community
  • The church is hoping for mature Christians to
    come.
  • No plan to attract people to the church to
    Christ
  • Discipleship or maturity is a mysterious process
with no pattern or steps. 2 Pet. 13-8

3
What are the 3 keys to effective discipleship?
  • 1. Scope and Sequence
  • Churches do not know what a mature Christian
    looks like
  • 2. Active Discipleship
  • We are teaching people the job of a Christian is
to sit in the pew and take notes
  • 3. Personal Commitment
  • Challenge people to apply principles
  • Call people to commitment

4
What is the answer to the scope and sequence
problem?
  • A clear life development process for each age
    group in the church
  • Our present spontaneous format follows the latest
fads and teachers favorite or curriculums dictates

5
Scope and Sequence
  • The ancient church was effective because it knew
what it was trying to accomplish in the new
    disciple
  • It felt that if the new disciple would memorize 5
documents and think deeply and live out those 5
documents the disciple would be mature

6
What were those documents?
  • 10 Commandments
  • Also 1st and 2nd great commandments
  • The Lords Prayer
  • Beatitudes
  • Sermon on the mount
  • Apostles Creed
  • Ladder of Virtue (2 Pet. 13-8)
  • Fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5)

7
What is the church designed to be?
  • It is a processing plant for converting people
    from sinners to saints

8
What are the steps necessary to bring a person
from sinner to saint? From without Christ to
warrior for Christ? From atheist to ambassador

The goal for the church is clear
  • Mark 1229-31 Jesus answered, the foremost is,
You shall love the Lord you God with all your
heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength. The second is
this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
  • 1 Tim. 15 The goal of our instruction is love
from a pure heart, a good conscience and a
    sincere faith.
  • Produce people who genuinely love in each of
    their relationships
  • In a deeper and richer way every week

What is the answer to the Active Disciple
Personal commitment problem?
  • An instructional system that demands application
of scripture and calls for personal commitment to
    Gods truth
  • Our present instructional system is designed to
cover content but not change lives Until the
teachers take full responsibility for actual life
change in their students there will be no real
    discipleship

22
Active Disciple
  • You must give the disciple assignments
  • If the whole of the discipleship training is
book, then behavior is not changing
  • The disciple must
  • Try the new action (a Biblical project)
  • Practice the new action
  • Demonstrate proficiency with the new action
  • Get them doing the few basic actions well

23
Action Steps
  • I have sinned and need to come to God for
    cleansing, renewal, even salvation
  • I will make a list of my sins agree with God
they are wrong seeking cleansing forgiveness
  • I will work through one of the classic lists of
    sins each day this week

24
Personal Commitments
  • Declaration of action
  • Crucial call to action in seven days provide
    necessary materials
  • Levels of commitment
  • Internally externally friend public partner
  • Ways to call for a commitment
  • Speak act write
