Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is
an emerging pathogen transmitted by mosquitoes
that can cause fatal illness in humans and
horses. We examined VEEV in southern Mexico and
found that pathogenic strains may be maintained
by local mosquitoes between outbreaks.
