Background
  • Para-Medical Institution of Higher Learning that
    started in 1996 with only 1 campus
  • Only three departments and about 98 students
  • Now over 1000 students in 10 departments,
    including evening programs
  • Two departments have started to train and prepare
    students for Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree
    award
  • Similarly, both the academic and support staff
    has increased
  • Now the institute has grown to 3 campuses
  • Growing number of students and staff-there have
    been efforts to
  • Review HIV/AIDS programs aimed at strengthening
    the existing capacity,
  • Improve existing students knowledge and attitudes

Center for Continuing Education (CEFOCK), KHI
  • Has developed
  • Training manuals for Sexual and Reproductive
    Health,
  • An adapted module for HIV AIDS and whose
    training has been integrated into the entire
    Institutions training program.

Centre for HIV and AIDS Programs
Research
  • Coordinates all HIV AIDS programs Research at
    Kigali Health Institute (KHI)
  • Multi dimensional character of HIV/AIDS and the
    role of KHI as a public Health Institution
  • KHI carries out HIV/AIDS activities - Umbrella
    for Public Sector against HIV/AIDS (USPLS) of the
    National HIV/AIDS Control Commission (CNLS)
  • Mission of the USPLS favorable working
    environment for public institutions personnel
    involved in prevention and therapeutic
    psychosocial care and their respective families
    either infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.

KHI Centre for HIV and AIDS Research Programs
  • Domains
  • Internal or workplace staff risks and
    vulnerabilities are addressed as well as the
    academic mainstreaming of HIV/AIDS
  • External the institution undertakes HIV/AIDS
    interventions based on its mandate and capacities
    in support of national strategic efforts
  • Mission To establish a favorable environment
    for the prevention and mitigation of the impact
    of HIV/AIDS both with in and outside the
    institution.

Goals of the centre
  • Internally
  • Coordinate and facilitate HIV/AIDS workplace
    policies as well as academic development in
    relation to HIV/AIDS.
  • Capacity building for both the staff and students
    in matters related to HIV/AIDS
  • Establish an HIV/AIDS Strategic Information and
    Resource centre.
  • Develop an integrated academic response to
    HIV/AIDS.
  • Initiate an HIV/AIDS Research Committee within
    the institutions Research Directorate.
  • Develop Training manuals in relation to HIV/AIDS
    for the institution.
  • Create a data base about HIV/AIDS for use by the
    institution.
  • Collaborate with other partner institutions to
    maintain and upgrade research related to HIV/AIDS.

  • Provide technical support in the implementation
    of HIV/AIDS programs to external partner
    institutions/organizations.
  • Conduct different surveys including baseline
    surveys, Needs assessments and situation
    analyses/operational research for further
    interventions.
  • Participate in joint public events on HIV/AIDS
    with different organizations within the public
    and private sector.
  • An HIV and AIDS community outreach centre

  • Provide the institutions data base about
    HIV/AIDS for use by other partner
    institutions/organizations.
  • Mentor HIV/AIDS Coordinators or program managers
    from partner institutions/organizations about
    HIV/AIDS policy, programming and program
    implementation
  • Carry out HIV/AIDS training of personnel from
    both the public and private sectors about policy,
    programming and program implementation.

Activities
  • Maintain contacts with the National HIV/AIDS
    Control Commission with the aim of implementing
    and improving HIV/AIDS programs.
  • Encourage both staff and students at KHI to play
    an active role in campus based activities related
    to HIV/AIDS as well as assisting them or
    providing technical assistance in the elaboration
    and execution of academic and research
    programs/projects about HIV/AIDS.
  • Identify the necessary resources to respond to
    the identified needs.
  • Develop relationships with government, Non
    government organizations/institutions and
    International organizations with the aim of
    promoting HIV/AIDS programs.

  • Provide necessary information as requested by the
    USPLS/CNLS.
  • Develop adapted Reproductive Health Training
    materials in relation to HIV/AIDS
  • Provide technical support to the Centre for
    Continuing Education in training related to
    HIV/AIDS
  • Oversee and harmonize the curriculum with
    HIV/AIDS competences in all faculties at KHI

  • Create and receive approval of budgets for
    HIV/AIDS programs.
  • Prepare, collect and organize documents, articles
    and information concerning HIV/AIDS programs
    within the institution in order to make an
    archive and therefore facilitate planning for
    further programs.
  • Integrate National HIV/AIDS Campaigns within the
    institution.
  • Monitor and evaluate the Institutions response
    to the impacts of HIV/AIDS.

    other Health Risk Factors in 5 Randomly Selected
    Urban and Rural Rwandan prisons(KHI_MAP)
  • HIV/AIDS training Module (KHI-MAP) In progress
  • Body and Metabolic Complications associated with
    HIV and antiretroviral therapy (ART)
  • Operational research for quality of pre-service
    and in-service HIV/AIDS training in Rwanda.

  • Reinforcement of Behavior Change through
    Empowerment Skills to Break the HIV Transmission
    Chain (KHI-UNICEF)
  • The implementation and outcomes of voluntary
    counselling and testing programs in secondary
    schools in Rwanda
  • Secondary school students knowledge attitudes
    and risk behaviors in relation to HIV aids as a
    basis for youth counseling in Rwanda
  • Factors for the weak utilisation of PMTCT by
    partners of women who frequent PMTCT/VCT services
    at Remera-Rukoma hospital
