teaching, for His word was with authority.
4
Luke 433-35 (NKJV)
(33) Now in the synagogue there was a man who had
a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out
with a loud voice, (34) saying, Let us alone!
What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?
Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are
the Holy One of God! (35) But Jesus rebuked him,
saying, Be quiet, and come out of him! And when
the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came
out of him and did not hurt him.
5
Luke 436-37 (NKJV)
(36) Then they were all amazed and spoke among
themselves, saying, What a word this is! For
with authority and power He commands the unclean
spirits, and they come out. (37) And the report
about Him went out into every place in the
surrounding region.
6
Luke 438-39 (NKJV)
(38) Now He arose from the synagogue and entered
Simons house. But Simons wifes mother was sick
with a high fever, and they made request of Him
concerning her. (39) So He stood over her and
rebuked the fever, and it left her. And
immediately she arose and served them.
7
Luke 440-41 (NKJV)
(40) When the sun was setting, all those who had
any that were sick with various diseases brought
them to Him and He laid His hands on every one
of them and healed them. (41) And demons also
came out of many, crying out and saying, You are
the Christ, the Son of God! And He,
rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for
they knew that He was the Christ.
8
Luke 442-44 (NKJV)
(42) Now when it was day, He departed and went
into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him
and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from
leaving them (43) but He said to them, I must
preach the kingdom of God to the other cities
also, because for this purpose I have been sent.
(44) And He was preaching in the synagogues of
Galilee.

Deity Confronts the Demons
10
Deity Confronts the DemonsLuke 431-44
  • Jesus Teaches with Authority (31-32)
  • How do we understand this? In what ways did Jesus
teach differently than the scribes and Pharisees?

11
Deity Confronts the DemonsLuke 431-44
  • Jesus Teaches with Authority (31-32)
  • 1. He didnt quote the Rabbis.
  • Among the rabbis it was usual to accredit ones
words by citing illustrious predecessors. (R.
Eliezer piously disavowed novelty nor have I
ever in my life said a thing which I did not hear
    from my teachers Sukkah 28a)
  • Jesus You have heard that it was said, but
    I say unto you

  • Knows who Jesus is. James 219 Even the demons
    believe, and tremble.
  • Knows he will be punished. Matthew 829 Have
You come here to torment us before the time?
  • Perhaps released for a time. Jude 16 And the
angels who did not keep their proper domain, but
left their own abode, He has reserved in
everlasting chains under darkness for the
    judgment of the great day.

Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
They were all amazed, so that they debated among
themselves, saying, What is this? A new teaching
with authority! He commands even the unclean
spirits, and they obey Him. Mark 127
25
Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
  • But if I by the Spirit of God cast out demons,
then is the kingdom of God come upon you.

26
Demon
Possession
Today?
27
Wild Speculation
  • Charismatics, Pentecostals, and now many
Evangelicals, have a tendency to attribute any
significant act of sinfulness, even by their own
children, as being the temporary possession by an
    evil spirit.
  • People who are merely strange or afflicted with
mental illness are often thought of as being
    demon-possessed.
  • People who lead extremely wicked lives or who are
deep into the occult are often thought of as
    being demon possessed.

28
Demon Possession Today?
  • Do evil spirits enter into human bodies and
afflict people today? I confidently affirm they
    do not.
  • So-called modern examples of demon possession and
exorcism bear no resemblance to the genuine
examples of spirit possession described in the
    New Testament.

29
Demon Possession Today?
  • Do evil spirits enter into human bodies and
afflict people today? I confidently affirm they
    do not.
  • A careful study of the NT leads to the
conclusion that demon possession was a
first-century experience suspended near the end
    of the apostolic era.

30
Demon Possession Today?
  • Do evil spirits enter into human bodies and
afflict people today? I confidently affirm they
    do not.
  • Zechariah 131-2 prophesies of the removal of
the unclean spirt from the land at the time of
    Jesus.

31
ZECHARIAH 131-2
1 "In that day a fountain shall be opened for
the house of David and for the inhabitants of
Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness. 2 "It
shall be in that day," says the LORD of hosts,
"that I will cut off the names of the idols from
the land, and they shall no longer be remembered.
I will also cause the prophets and the unclean
spirit to depart from the land.
32
ZECHARIAH 131
1 "In that day a fountain shall be opened for
the house of David and for the inhabitants of
Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.
  • TIME OF CHRIST ESTABLISHED BY THE CONTEXT See
    Zech. 1210-14
  • POURING OF HOLY SPIRIT v.10 cf. Acts 21ff)
  • PIERCING OF CHRIST (v. 10 cf. Jn. 2025-27)
  • MOURNING IN THAT DAY (v. 11 cf. Lk. 2417)
  • STRIKE THE SHEPHERD (137 cf. Matt. 31, 56)

33
OBSERVATIONS
  • PROPHETS WOULD DWELL TEMPORARILY AND THEN BE
    REMOVED
  • UNCLEAN SPIRITS WOULD DWELL TEMPORARILY AND THEN
    BE REMOVED
  • EITHER DEMONS WERE CAUSED TO DEPART FROM THE
LAND IN THAT DAY OR NOT!
  • DO YOU BELIEVE ZECHARIAH? OR SOME MODERN DAY
PREACHER WHO THINKS DEMONS STILL EXIST?

34
IF DEMONS EXISTED ON EARTH TODAY
  • THERE WOULD BE NO DEBATE
  • SUCH WOULD BE WELL ESTABLISHED IN THE MINDS OF
    ALL MEN
  • THERE WOULD BE A LOT OF BODILY HARM INFLICTED
UPON MODERN DAY EXORCISTS (cf. Acts 1913-16)

35
THOSE WHO PRACTICE EXORCISMS TODAY
  • LIKE THE SEVEN SONS OF SCEVA, TODAYS EXORCISTS
SPEAK IN THE NAME OF JESUS BUT ARE NOT TRUE
    MINISTERS OF CHRIST
  • TEACH FALSE DOCTRINE REGARDING SALVATION, THE
    CHURCH, ETC.
  • THEY WILL USE SIMILAR DECEPTIVE TACTICS TO FOOL
THEIR AUDIENCE, YET THEY WILL NOT BE OVERCOME BY
A DEMON. . . BECAUSE THERE ARE NONE IN THE LAND
    TO OVERCOME THEM!!!!

36
New Testament Data
  • The New Testament explicitly states that the day
would come when miracles would cease. (1 Cor.
    138-10)
  • With the close of the first century, when the
Scriptures were completed, the age of miraculous
    gifts came to a close.

Edited from Demons Ancient Superstition or
Historical Reality? by Wayne Jackson
37
New Testament Data
  • No one is duplicating the miracles of the first
    century.
  • No one can walk upon water, raise the dead, calm
a raging storm, turn water into wine, instantly
heal an amputated ear, extract tax money from a
    fishs mouth, etc.

Historical Reality? by Wayne Jackson
38
New Testament Data
  • Miracles are self-authenticating phenomena that
cannot be denied, even by hostile critics (cf.
    John 1147 Acts 414-16).
  • Miracles are NOT occurring today.

39
So, What Are WeExperiencing Today?
  • Strong Delusions Lying Wonders
  • 2 Thess. 29-12

40
Todays Warfare
  • When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own,
for he is a liar and the father of it.John 844

Who exchanged the truth of God for the lie

  • Jesus Heals Peters Mother-in-law and Many
    Others (38-41)
  • It seems that Lukes purpose in recording the
healing of Simons mother-in-law is to show the
immediate and dramatic improvement that took
    place when Jesus healed.

44
Luke 442-44 (NKJV)
(42) Now when it was day, He departed and went

  • Jesus is Begged to Stay but Leaves to Preach to
    Others (42-44)
  • Were the Jews at Capernaum better than those at
    Nazareth?
  • Matthew 1120-24

46

  • Why didnt Jesus stay to heal all of the sick in
    Capernaum? Or in any place?
  • John 626-27 1 Tim. 315 516

47
Chapter 431-44
Lessons
48
LUKE 431-44 Lessons
  • Preachers need to read and speak the oracles of
    God, not speculations.
  • Miracles were instantaneous, astonishing, and
undeniable, not like those claimed today.
  • Exorcisms, healings and all miracles were for the
purpose of establishing the authority of the
words of Gods messenger(s), not for satisfying
the earthly desires of the multitudes.
