1
Nonproliferation Arms Control Division
  • Mission
  • To promote and advance the research, development
and application of effective technologies to
control proliferation risks and in support of
    arms control treaties and agreements.
  • To educate and provide outreach to the public
    about international arms control and
    nonproliferation issues.

What is Nonproliferation?
  • Nonproliferation is any effort
  • (bilateral agreement, international treaty or
    organization)
  • that prevents the spread of weapons of mass
    destruction
  • (nuclear, chemical and biological)

Commercially available technologies can also play
an important role in addressing proliferation
concerns
Material protection, control, and accounting
(MPCA) is a fundamental pillar of
nonproliferation
3
What is Arms Control?
Arms control is any multilateral, bilateral, or
unilateral measure taken to reduce or control a
weapons arsenal.
On May 24th, 2002, U.S. President George W. Bush
and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the
Strategic Offensive Reduction Treaty (SORT).
