Defining a portal
  • Definitions vary but fundamentally portals are
seen as roadmaps or gateways to information
    resources
  • There are different kinds of portals from very
simple ones that provide a basic index to
information resources to more sophisticated ones
that not only manage the catalogue of information
resources but also how different categories of
    visitors view these resources.
  • Sophisticated portals organize information in
    channels, customizable page containers where
    specific information or applications appears.
Users to these portals have customized
information that may include calendars, to-do
    lists, discussion groups, announcement and
    reports, news feeds, searches etc.

Phases in Mandela Portal development
  • The Portal has had a long history dating back at
    least 8 yrs.
  • The main web domain www.nelsonmandela.org was
first registered on the 29th of October 2001.
Since then other domains have been acquired in
order to resolve to the main domain including
    www.nelsonmandela.com , www.nelsonmandela.org.za
    , www.nelsonmandela.biz and www.nelsonmandela.co.z
    a
  • However, others are still in the process of being
    acquired including www.nelsonmandela.net ,
    www.nelsonmnadela.info, and www.nelsonmandela.edu.
  • The WayBackMachine (an archive of websites) dates
the Portals first archived collection is from
    March 23rd 2002.

9
Phases of the Mandela Portal
  • There have been three distinct phases to the
development of the Portal, coinciding with
different service providers used at each phase.
  • The first phase that lasted until November 2005
  • There were links to speech content, press
    releases, merchandise, and a webcast.

10
Phases of the Mandela Portal
  • The 2nd phase was from November 2005 until July
2007. Additional features included an image
    gallery and a search facility
  • The 3rd phase began in July 2007 and still
continues with different stages of improvement
    each year

Concluding remarks
  • Most traffic is from North America and Europe. On
the website, of the top 10 countries, 5 are from
Europe and 2 from North America accounting for
    52 of the traffic.
  • Looking at the statistics on landing and exit
pages, 63 of the visitors landed on the home
page 41 exited from the home page. This has
caused a review of the home page to create user
paths in order to reduce the bounce rate.

Concluding remarks dotmobi site
  • According to the International Telecommunication
Union, mobile phone penetration in South Africa
by last year was 92.15. This figure compared to
others (e.g. computers 8.36, internet users
8.16, fixed lines 9.56) provides an enormous
    opportunity.
  • The institution started working on a mobi site in
the 2nd half of 2008 and did a soft launch in
December. The aim is to actively use it within
several of the institutions programmes with
    communities

35
Concluding remarks dot mobi site
  • The sites address http//m.nelsonmandela.org
    with www.nelsonmandela.mobi currently being
    acquired.
  • Statistics on the site were tracked from 1st
    December 2008 to 28th February 2009
  • Not surprising US and Norway visitors account for
    52 of the traffic.
  • Additionally, more than 60 of the traffic either
comes from referring sites or search engines.
