His History

• Born August 3, 1900 to Will and Maria Pyle near
  Dana, Indiana
• Graduated high school and enlisted in the Naval
  Reserves
• Studied journalism at Indiana University
• Dropped out of Journalism school and reported for
  the LaPorte Herold
• Reported for the Washington Daily News in 1923
• In 1932 became a roving journalist for Scripps
  Howard Newspapers
• Began traveling with his wife Jerry until 1937
  when her health deteriorated mentally
• Indiana Journalism School

The Blitz

• In 1940, Ernie and Jerry built home in
  Albuquerque
• Ernie went to England to cover The Blitz
• He became noted for writing his stories from the
  front lines, unlike other journalists
• He wrote the book Brave Men, talked about his
  travels
• 1944, he flew in a B-26 Marauder Bomber and
  ventured out in inside a destroyer tank unit with
  the soldiers

His Death

• Proposed soldiers should be given fight pay, it
  gave combat soldiers a 50 increase in pay
• Lost his life while in the Pacific to a snipers
  bullet
• Remembered by thousands to this day and was a
  friend to many
• He died on April 18th, 1945 and in commemoration
  of his death, the 18th is observed as National
  Columnists Day.
