    customs and ways of life were created.
  • New trends in Culture and style- Women gained a
    new sense of independence. Women received the
    right to vote with the 19th amendment. Women in
    the U.S. and Western Europe began using rouge and
    lipstick in public, and cut their hair short,
    This type of woman was called a flapper.
    Sports heros came on to the scene Babe ruth, Big
    Bill Tilden(tennis), HelenMoody(tennis), Gertrude
    Ederle(swam English channel, Charles Lindbergh.

Postwar
  • Technology- the automobile was created, highways
    followed, people traved farther on vacation due
    to the car, Radio-news shows, advertisements,
    radio encouraged people to buy consumer goods
    using motivation. Also packaged foods,
    refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, electric irons,
    and more leisure time was now available. Another
    invention was the movie.

Revolutionary ideas
  • Phyics- Albert Einstein- theory of
    relativitythere were no absolutes in measuring
    time and space instead depended on the relative
    motion of bodies in space. Einstein also talked
    about the Speed of light and talked about that
    all matter has energy. The breaking down of
    matter could form large amounts of energy (atomic

  • Psychology- Sigmund Freud- studied how the human
    mind worked. He studied the unconscious mind
    shapes our behavior. (the mind is ful of memories
    good and bad. His theories were used to help the
    mentally ill and also with child rearing

Literature/ paintings
  • WWI had a big influence on authors and artist.
    Ex. Waste land, hollow men, by T.S. Eliot he
    combined many literary, religious and historical
    references and a sense of despair. Earnest
    Hemingway(The sun also Rises) and F.Scott
    Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby)used different way
    of expressing the times more upbeat. James Joyce-
    published a book called Ulysses- which expresses
    the inter-thoughts of the character in his book.
  • Paintings- Cubism- Pablo Picasso he painted Les
    Demooiselles d Avignon it used intersecting
    shapes. Dada-used art form that shocked people,
    paintings that were of meaningless random
    arrangement of objects and words.His art led to
    Surrealism- art form that had dream like
    images.(influenced Freud).

  • Sergey Prokofiev- age of steel composer Arnold
    Schenberg he composed Pierrt Lunaire used harsh
    dissonant music to express what he reguarded as
    the decay of western civilization.
  • The U.S. came up with their own music called
    jazz. Mixture of folk music and western
    rhythums, harmonies from European classical
    musicand work songs from slave times. (Louis
    Armstrong, blues singer Bessie Smith, Jelly roll
    Morton.
  • Dance- Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham transformed
    the art of dance. Sergey Diahilev-(Russian)
    blended modern dance with ballet

  • Walter Gropius- Bauhaus school of design. Frank
    Lloyd Wright- blended his structures with natural
    surroundings.
  • Popular culture- movies reflected the time era .
    Movies like The Last Laugh. Charlie
    Chaplin-used humor. The jazz singer- did away
    with silent movies
