Project Goals Design, implementation and
application of a novel multi-level system of
systems for advanced, interactive computer
simulation and modeling and based on a
computational economy.
Outcomes Ideas We developed an event-driven
architecture for scalable Internet services
(including simulation services) which much
sustain massive concurrency (on the order of tens
of thousands of clients per server), and enormous
variations in load (such as flash crowds and load
spikes that are orders of magnitude greater than
the average load). Tools Our Ganglia cluster
monitoring and management tool, available
open-source from http//ganglia.sourceforge.net/,
became the most popular cluster and distributed
computing download on SourceForge. It is
presently in use by hundreds of universities,
private and government laboratories, and
commercial cluster implementers around the world.
People We developed a 3D MEMS simulation
web-service, called MMEMS, based on the SUGAR
simulator and hosted on Millennium. It was used
by 96 students in EE245, Introduction to MEMS
Design, Berkeleys main MEMS design course,
during the fall semester.

Impact The ability to rapidly deploy novel
scalable services was demonstrated after 9/11
when students built a service (http//safe.millenn
ium.Berkeley.edu ) to allow people throughout the
world to match information on potential missing
persons with information on sightings,
registrations, etc. In less than 24-hours the
load climbed over a million hits and continued to
grow throughout the crisis. It was highlighted
on CNN and other venues. In addition to its
social value, we learned numerous subtleties
about service design and user interfaces for
people in a state of crisis. This is one of many
ways in which SimMillennium formed a basis for
the new Center for Information Technology
Research in Interest of Society (CITRIS).
Barriers Opportunities The SimMillennium
cluster of clusters spans several departments
through campus and integrates numerous
interdisciplinary activities within an
experimental computing infrastructure. Balancing
the disparate needs of the computer science and
computational science activities and active
collaboration across disciplines are both our
main challenge and a tremendous opportunity for
generation of new ideas through cross
fertilization.
