Steel
Rod
Bar (Flat Square)
Sheet
For this project we used sheet steel for the
blade and flat bar for the handle.
In the school workshop we have the following
types of Steel
3
Steel and its uses
Steel is the most commonly used metal and is used
in everything from Sewing needles to Skyscrapers
HMS Ark Royal
AHS Library
Advantages
Low Cost, High Strength Easy to work with.
Disadvantages
Rusts
The Golden Gate Bridge

Guillotine
The Guillotine was used to cut the blade to
shape. When using this machine pupils should be
aware of the following hazards Closing movement
between shearing surface and other parts can
result in trapping and serious injury. Sharp
edges on cut material can cause cuts. (When
carrying large sheets of metal wear gloves) Lack
of space around the guillotine can lead to the
operator being pushed by passers by. Slippery
floor surface or loose items around the machine
can cause slips that result in contact with
moving parts. Manual handling of sheet metal can
present a hazard. Conditions of use. Only one
person is allowed to use this equipment at a time.

Guillotine
The Guillotine or Bench Shears is primarily
designed for cutting sheet metal (up to 4.8mm
thick). However they can also be used to cut
round or square section metal via the shear hole
(up to 12.7mm diameter)

Marking out Tools
Engineers Square
Ball Pein Hammer
When marking out the blade you used the following
tools
Scriber
Centre Punch
Odd Leg Callipers
Rule
Dividers
7
Drilling Metals
Machine Vice
Remember always wear goggles when using the drill.
Hand Vice
When using a twist drill to drill metal you must
always secure the work piece in a vice. For
holding the handle we used a Machine Vice and to
hold the blade we used a Hand Vice
8
Forming The Blade
Raw Hide Mallet
Jig
The blade was formed by fixing it into a jig and
beating it into shape with a Raw Hide Mallet
9
Counter Sink Bit
The Countersink Bit was used to countersink holes
for the Rivets
The Countersink bit can be used in a hand drill,
pillar drill or Cordless drill

Riveting The Blade
The Rivet Set Snap was fixed securely in the
centre of the Engineers Vice
The tools used to rivet the blade were the Rivet
Set Snap and a Ball Pein Hammer Rivets are
available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and
Materials

Dip Coating the Handle
To Dip coat the handle we heated the trowel in
the oven then dipped the hot trowel into the
Fluidising tank. The plastic powder then adhered
to the handle of the trowel
The picture above shows some examples of products
that have been Dip Coated in plastic.
