Title: New Davie HighAuxiliary Campus, Early College Facility Needs

1
New Davie High/Auxiliary Campus, Early College
Facility Needs
  • Board of Education
  • Facilities Request
  • July 20, 2009

2
Board Proposal from July 14, 2009
  • The Board of Education voted to request the Board
of County Commissioners to fund, by whatever
means they deem appropriate, either by allocation
of funds, the sale of COPS, or the sale of bonds
  • the construction of a new Davie County High
School on a site centrally located in the county
with a square footage not to exceed 207,132
    square feet,
  • including within that square footage an alternate
bid for an approximately 11,500 square foot,
    750-person auditorium.
  • the construction of a new building or facility,
not exceed 12,000 square feet of space, for the
Early College on the community college campus, to
be dedicated for the exclusive use of the
community college and school system for the
operation of the high school portion of the Early
    College program.
  • In addition, to request the Board of Trustees of
the Davidson County Community College Board to
join in the request of the Board of Education to
the County Commissioners and to enter into an
Agreement or Memorandum of Understanding with the
Board of Education regarding the planning,
design, construction and use of the new facility
    for the Early College Program.

3
Proposal DevelopmentNew Davie High/Auxiliary
Campus Goals
  • Create a 9-12 plan which uses the current Davie
High campus for identified 11th and 12th grade
elective courses in conjunction with courses
offered at a new Davie High campus.
  • Compare the size requirements for current and
future instructional spaces by program areas and
    disciplines.
  • Evaluate the possibilities of moving other DCS
departments/programs to the current Davie High
    campus.

4
Proposal DevelopmentNew Davie High/Auxiliary
Campus Findings
  • The combined use of a new 9-12 Davie High campus
and an auxiliary campus, the current Davie
    campus, would provide more instructional
opportunities for our students with both campuses
being under the direct supervision of the new
    Davie High principal.
  • This combined use would require a scheduling
approach for both campuses which would allow
    maximum student/teacher flexibility.
  • Additional spaces would be available for other
DCS programs or departments at the current Davie
    High campus.

5
Proposal DevelopmentHow the instructional plan
would work
  • All students would take core area subjects at the
    new Davie High.
  • All students would attend the new Davie High
campus at some point every school day.
  • Selected 11th and 12th grade electives would be
offered at the auxiliary campus (current Davie
High). These electives would be drawn from a
    variety of programs and disciplines.
  • Students wishing to take those electives would
either attend those classes in the morning at the
auxiliary campus and then go to the new Davie
High campus for core and other elective courses
or they would start the instructional day at the
new Davie High campus and then go to the
auxiliary campus for the selected elective
    courses.

6
Proposal DevelopmentHow the instructional plan
would work
  • Since electives offered at the auxiliary campus
would be those designed for 11th and 12th grade
students, many of them would drive to the
auxiliary campus but we would need shuttle
services during the instructional day for those
    who needed transportation.
  • This would also mean that some of those students
would be able to eat off campus during their
trips between campuses. There would still need to
be a working cafeteria at the auxiliary campus to
serve students who want to eat lunch while there.
  • The number of students who are off the new Davie
High campus at any one time during the
instructional day would allow common areas such
as the cafeteria to be built for 1700 students.

7
Possible Curriculum Offerings at the Auxiliary
campus
  • Advanced art courses
  • Advanced Marketing
  • Apprenticeship/Internship classes
  • Advanced PE courses such as Lifestyles class and
    advanced weightlifting
  • Prostart I and II (culinary)

  • Specific self-contained EC class

8
Possible Curriculum Offerings at the Auxiliary
campus

    learning
  • Advanced foreign languages lab
  • Leadership Academy courses
  • SAT Preparation
  • Advanced Carpentry
  • Advanced Auto Technology
  • Advanced Graphic Arts

10
Proposal DevelopmentHow the instructional plan
would work
  • The teachers of the selected electives to be
taught at the auxiliary campus would need to
follow the basic plan that students would follow.
  • These teachers may begin their teaching day at
the auxiliary campus and then travel to the new
Davie High to teach additional courses or they
may begin at the new Davie High and then travel
    to the auxiliary campus.

11
Example of a teacher schedule
  • Richard
  • New Davie High
  • 830-1000 Auto Tech I (S)
  • 1005-1055 Auto Tech I (Y)
  • Planning and Lunch
  • Auxiliary Campus
  • 1220- 325 Advanced Auto Tech

12
Benefits of New Davie High and Auxiliary Campus
Plan
  • The plan will allow us to design a more
functional main high school campus which, in
conjunction with the auxiliary campus, will
better address the space/facility needs of our
    9-12 students.
  • The plan would provide more instructional
opportunities for our students. Currently, we
simply cannot increase core and elective
offerings as we are bound by space limitations on
    one campus.
  • All Davie County students will attend the new
Davie High campus while some may attend the
auxiliary campus for particular courses as needed
    by their program of study.

13
Benefits of New Davie High and Auxiliary Campus
Plan
  • The two campuses will encourage more scheduling
    options hybrid schedules, combinations of
year-long and semester courses, longer and more
lab type classes on the auxiliary campus, etc.
  • The plan will allow greater flexibility to the
course needs of our students on a year-by-year
    basis.
  • Since the principal of the new Davie High would
be the principal for the auxiliary campus as
well, both campuses would operate under the same
decision-making process and would be aligned in
    all matters.

14
Benefits of New Davie High and Auxiliary Campus
Plan
  • Our high school students would not have to take
classes in one of the 26 mobiles on the current
    Davie High campus.
  • The plan has provisions to maximize much of the
current Davie High campus as it provides for use
of the campus to supplement the new Davie High
curriculum but also allows for other DCS
programs/departments to occupy the current Davie
    High campus.

15
Proposal DevelopmentHow we determined the space
needs for an 1700 student high school
  • Current site is 192,764 square feet in permanent
    space.
  • Current site has 26 mobile classrooms (21,764
    square feet)
  • Current site has1 POD (5,000 square feet)
  • Minimum space requirements as recommended by
NCDPI were determined for a new school.

16
Proposal DevelopmentNew Davie High Needs
  • We would need to construct a minimum of 207,132
sq ft facility for the new Davie High.
  • Alternate bid for a 750 seat theatre/auditorium
which would be approximately 11,500 sq ft.
  • 31.3M estimated proposed cost as provided by FWA
Group Architects including 5 contingency, hard
    and soft costs, and theatre/auditorium.
  • The goal is to occupy the new high school by the
    fall of 2011.

17
Proposal Development
