Keep Onslow Beautiful (KOB)
  • Keep Onslow Beautiful is responsible for
    educating the community about environmental

DPPEA grant. In 2006, we started school
recycling at 3 schools and in 2007 we expanded to
    2 more schools.
  • We are now expanding to more schools each year.
In 2007-08, we are able to expand to 12 more
schools with the help of the USDA and DPPEA.
  • We also encourage and inspire citizens to
    participate in clean-ups, recycling, reporting
    litterbugs, beautification projects, and everyday
involvement in insuring a clean environment for
    the future of Onslow County.
  • We also coordinate the Environmental Quality
Indicators Report (EQI) each year, reporting on
the overall environmental quality in Onslow

North Carolina Landfill Bans
  • Since 1994, Aluminum Cans have been banned from
    any NC landfill.
  • This was done in an effort to divert a material
that was much more important to the market than
    it was to landfill.

26
Other Landfill Bans
  • Prohibit the disposal of motor vehicle oil
filters, rigid plastic containers, wood pallets,
    and oyster shells in landfills.
  • Rigid plastic containers that have a neck smaller
than the body of the container, and that accept a
screw top, snap top, or other closure. Does not
apply to rigid plastic containers that are
intended for the sale or distribution of motor
    oil.
  • Wood pallets, except that wooden pallets may be
disposed of in a landfill that is permitted to
only accept construction and demolition debris.
  • A county or city may petition the Dept. for a
waiver from the prohibition on disposal of a
material in a landfill if they can show that the
prohibition of it would constitute an economic
    hardship.
  • Act becomes effective October 1, 2009

27
Other Landfill Legislation
  • Require holders of certain ABC Permits to recycle
all recyclable containers of all beverages sold
at retail on the premises and to prohibit the
disposal of those containers in the landfills or
    by incineration.
  • Holders of malt beverage permits, on-premises
    unfortified wine permits, on-premises fortified
    wine permits, and mixed-beverages permits.
  • Will have to separate, store, and provide for the
collection for recycling of all recyclable
beverage containers of all beverages sold at
    retail on premises.
  • A permittee will have satisfied the req. for a
recycling program if they meet the minimum
standards developed by the Commission pursuant to
    G.S. 130A-309.14(m).
  • Act becomes effective January 1, 2008

28
Why Recycle?
  • Economics You save money by recycling in Onslow
County Use the Convenience Center and the More
You Recycle the More Money you Save
  • 1.50 / 30 gal bag of trash v. Recycle FREE
  • Recycling creates tens of thousands of jobs here
    in North Carolina

29
Why Recycle Cont.
  • Environment
  • It is also important to remember that recycling
recovers valuable raw materials. If we make
aluminum cans from recycled cans, then we don't
have to disturb the environment by mining and
smelting the mineral bauxite which is used in the
    manufacture of aluminum.

30
Why Recycle Review
  • Reducing waste by recycling also reduced
pollution and the need for new landfills.
  • Recycling Creates Jobs
