HISTORY
  • NZ was first settled by ancestors of the Maori
    people about 1,000 years ago
  • The first European settlers arrived about 1800
  • NZ became a British colony in 1840
  • 1893 NZ became first nation in world to allow
    women to vote
  • NZ became independent in stages during the
    first half of the 20th century

  • New Zealand is an independent country, but
    Queen Elizabeth II of England is officially the
    Head of State.
  • The Country is a parliamentary democracy with
    elections every three years
  • Helen Clark has been Prime Minister since 1999
