Title: The University of California Institutional Working Paper Repository Model

1
The University of California Institutional
Working Paper Repository Model Process
  • Roy Tennant
  • eScholarship, California Digital Library

2
The Environment
  • University of California 9, soon 10 campuses
  • eScholarship An initiative of the California
Digital Library 3 staff, with additional
    fractional staff support
  • Key Requirement a software infrastructure that
would be easy to use for our users and be easy to
    support

3
Experimentation with ePrints
  • Ran an initial experiment with the eprints.org
    software
  • Discovered that it was difficult to customize and
    hard to post papers
  • Meanwhile, discovered a system that handled the
peer review process very well (which we also
wanted to be able to do)
  • Decided to go with that, and dumb it down for
    use as an eprint repository

4
Berkeley Electronic Press (bepress)
  • UC Berkeley faculty start-up company
  • EdiKit Web-based peer review journal software.
    Features include
  • Easy article submission process
  • Submission in MS Word or RTF, automatic creation
    of Adobe Acrobat (PDF) version
  • Assignment and tracking of reviewers
  • Automatic email notifications
  • Pre-publication review process
  • Publication of single articles or entire issue

5
CDL bepress
  • CDL has two relationships with bepress
  • A software license for their EdiKit software for
e-journal, e-book, and working paper repository
    publication and management
  • A co-development agreement that enables CDL to
    specify future enhancements
  • CDL is now positioned to take a commercial-grade
product and tailor it to library needs (e.g.,
    interoperability with other repositories)

6
How We are Changing EdiKit
  • Open Archives initiative (OAI) compliance
  • Ability to output METS records
  • Ability to publish books
  • Ablility to submit associated files (e.g., data
to back-up the paper) and HTML versions
  • Highly-configurable interface (simple for simple
tasks, full-featured for more complex tasks)

7
The eScholarship Repository Model
  • A unified identity enforced by a central system
  • A focus on UC institutes, centers, and
    departments
  • Interaction with faculty for buy-in, then
    training of appropriate staff
  • Customization of the sub-site
  • Setup and support contracted to bepress

8
Roll-Out Plans
  • In low hanging fruit stage for the Summer, with
a mass mailing planned for the Fall
  • Are identifying key institutes, centers and
    departments for phone contact
  • Those who are ready will be directed to the
join web site to begin the process

9
The Join Process
  • The join web site has forms for providing the
information required to set up their site
  • We provide boilerplate for their customization
regarding author agreements, site policies and
    the paper submission process
  • Form submissions are emailed to CDL and bepress
    staff
  • The institute, center, or department chair must
    sign an MOU with CDL
  • Their site is set up and staff are trained by
    bepress staff
