Title: Online Voting Systemn

1
Online Voting Systemn
  • By Travis Burlock

2
The Problem
  • The current voting system for elections is flawed
  • In urban districts with too few voting stations,
lines were up to 10 hours long
  • Punch-card machines are notorious for a high
    percentage of "spoiled" ballots.
  • Many electronic voting machines failed to start
in the morning and others malfunctioned
throughout the day, often resulting in lengthy
    delays.
  • Many voters requested absentee ballots that
arrived too late to use or never arrived at all.

The Solution
Online Voting System
  • Secured by fingerprint technology.
  • People could vote from home, or public computers.
  • Connected to a database.
  • Would allow continuation of voting stations for
those who prefer them or dont have access to a
    computer.
  • Voting stations would be computers connected to
the internet that have fingerprint readers.

4
How it works.
  • Voters could go to a computer with a fingerprint
reader and navigate to the site.
  • Scan their fingerprint and put in some
    identifying information (name, ssn, birthdate,
etc) possibly (if it would be needed)
  • The voting interface would show up, and they can
    cast their votes.
  • This is then sent to the database and they would
be logged as having voted and their votes would
    be tallied.

5
Requirements
  • This would be sold to the government (state or
    federal)
  • They would purchase the database, website and any
    software required
  • They would promote the purchase of fingerprint
readers (maybe have vendors at voting stations
    selling them)
  • Fingerprint readers cost about 20-40 right now,
and there exists keyboards with fingerprint
readers built in for around 30-40.

6
Advantages
  • Quicker lines at voting stations
  • Some people would not have to go to voting
    stations
  • Less errors
  • More people voting

7
Disadvantages
  • Getting fingerprint readers to everyone could be
    difficult
  • Some politicians do some last minute campaigning
    at the voting stations
  • There is some technophobia among some people out
of fear of security leaks and hacking.
