1
The ABCs of Math
By Mrs. Meinertzs Class
2
Area
  • Area is the size a surface takes up measured in
    square units.
  • We find the area a rug covers on the floor.

3
Bar Graph
  • It uses bars to show how much of something.
  • They can easily compare numbers.

4
Congruent
  • All sides and are the same and it is the same
    size and angles.
  • The two balls are congruent.

5
Divisor
  • A number that will divide the dividend.
  • A divisor is in an equation like four puppies
    divided by two.

6
Equilateral
  • Equilateral is a triangle with three equal sides
    and three equal angles.
  • You would see one as a yield sign.

7
Factor
  • Factor a whole number that divides exactly
    another number.
  • If there are six cookies I will tell you the
    factors
  • 1and 2 are factors of 6 and so is 3.

8
Gallon
  • Standard unit of capacity for measuring liquids.
  • We measure milk in gallons.

9
Hexagon
  • A polygon with six sides.
  • The tiles show hexagons.

10
Isosceles Triangle
  • Triangle with two equal sides and two equal
    angles.
  • A Christmas tree is an isosceles triangle.

11
Join
  • It is to put or bring together so as to make
    continuous.
  • All the states join together to make our country.

12
Kilometer
  • Standard metric unit for measuring distance.
  • You see this on the highway in United Kingdom
    instead of miles.

13
Line Segment
  • A long thin continuous mark, that is part of a
    line.
  • A train track is a long line segment.

14
Mean
  • The mean is the average of a number of different
    amounts.
  • The average in Rhode Island January the
    temperature is 29 degrees F.

15
Numerator
  • It is a number above the line of the fraction,
showing the number of parts of the whole.
  • Sometimes I see a numerator when people are
advertising the prices of the gas. Nine is the
    numerator in this sign.

16
Obtuse Angle
The black hands on this clock make an obtuse
angle.
  • Any angle between 90 degrease and 180 degrease.
  • Sometimes the hands on a clock are an obtuse
    angle.

17
Perimeter
  • Distance around the outside of a shape.
  • A fence can go around the edge of a field.

18
Quadrilateral
  • It is a polygon with four sides.
  • You would see it at the supermarket, like a box
    of Junior Mints.

19
Rhombus
  • Rhombus is a parallelogram with four equal sides
    and equal opposite angles.
  • A baseball infield is a rhombus because it has
    four equal sides.

20
Similar Figures
  • Two shapes are similar if they have the same
    shape but different sizes.
  • These coffee cups are the same shape but a
different size so they are similar.

21
Turn
  • To turn is to rotate around a point.
  • A wheel on a car turns when you drive it.

22
Vertex
  • Point where surfaces meet (corner).
  • Like on the corners of a stop sign.

23
Whole Number
  • A counting number from 0 to infinity.
  • We use whole numbers to count.

24
X-Axis
  • The horizontal axis of a graph.
  • The months are along the x-axis.

25
Year
  • The time it takes the earth to completely orbit
the sun, equal to 12 months, 52 weeks or 365
    days.
  • We can use a calendar to measure a year.

26
Zero
  • A number meaning nothing or none.
  • There are 0 trees in this picture.
