Compressed Gas Storage
  • Use of compressed gases is essential to the
support of the SCARNG mission. These gases must
    be stored and managed properly.
  • All compressed gas cylinders must be legibly
marked to identify the gas content with either
the chemical or trade name of the gas.
  • Compressed gas cylinders must be stored in well
protected, well ventilated, dry locations at
least 20 feet from highly combustible materials
such as oil or excelsior. Also, assigned storage
spaces must be located where cylinders will not
be knocked over or damaged by passing or falling
objects, or subject to tampering by an
unauthorized person. Cylinders should be secured
to a stable adjacent structure such as a wall
with chain or other restraining material to
    prevent falling.
  • Valve protection caps, where cylinders are so
designed, must always be in place and hand tight,
except where cylinders are in use or connected
    for use.
  • Acetylene cylinders must always be stored valve
    end up.
  • Oxygen cylinders must be separated from fuel-gas
cylinders or combustible materials by a minimum
distance of 20 feet or by a non-combustible
barrier at least five feet high with a fire
resistance rating of at least one-half hour.
  • For more information, consult 29 CFR 1910.253

Can you find the deficiencies associated with the
compressed gas cylinder in this photo? This is
NOT at a SCARNG site! Obvious problems are that
the cylinder is unsecured, unlabeled, and has an
electrical cord draped over the cap.
