Lesson Objectives
  • Using a scanner, the students will be able to
    scan and save a picture of Clara Barton. They
    will then be able to go to my webpage and
    complete a webquest activity. By doing the
    webquest the students will learn briefly about
    Clara Barton and what she did to make history.

Lesson Objectives
  • After gathering information using the given
    URLs, the students will be able to use Microsoft
    Publisher to create a brochure about Clara
    Barton. They will learn how to use Publisher and
    will apply the photo that they scanned to their
    brochure.

Introduce the Activity
  • I will introduce the activity by showing pictures
    of Clara Barton. I will then ask the students if
    they know how she is. If they need help figuring
    it out, I will show them more clues, such as the
    American Red Cross symbol or pictures of her
    helping civil war soldiers.

  • After they identify Clara Barton, I will tell
    them that they will be using a scanner to scan
    the picture onto the computer and save it to use
    later. Next, I will tell them that they will be
    using my webpage to do a webquest activity on the
    computer (probably with a partner.)

    Barton, they will use Microsoft Publisher to
    create a brochure featuring Clara and the picture

  • To begin, I would start by introducing Clara
    Barton by using photos. Next, I would teach the
    students how to scan the photos into computer and
    save them. Then I would show the students, using
    the overhead projector, how to access my webpage
    and webquest.

  • I will show them how to use the webquest and the
    given URLs to gather information about Clara
    Barton. I would show the students how to use
    Microsoft Publisher to create their own brochure.
    I would demonstrate how to choose a template, a
    font scheme and a color scheme.

  • After teaching them how to use Publisher, I
    would show them how to insert the photo that they
    scanned into the brochure. Lastly, I would show
    the students how to save and print their finished
    brochures, and tell them what information is
    expected to be in the brochure.

  • In order to provide practice, I would have to
    students get into groups (pairs or threes) and
    practice scanning the photo onto the computer.
    After doing it in groups, each student will try
    it themselves. I will do the same thing with
    Microsoft Publisher, allowing the students time
    to get used to the program.

Provide Knowledge of Results
  • As the students work on using the scanner and
    Publisher, I will be there to walk around and
    assist students who may be having trouble. I will
    give them verbal feedback on how they are doing
    or what they need to do differently. Also, as I
    walk around I will give positive written feedback
    to each student to encourage them.

Review the Activity
  • To review the activity I will verbally quiz the
    students as we go along, or as a problem arises,
    on the steps and procedures of the different
    technologies. Also, at the end I will have each
    student share the information that they found on
    Clara Barton to make sure that everyone got the
    information and to review before the assessment.

Method of Assessment
  • To assess the students I will be grading their
    brochures for accurate information as well as for
    their use of Microsoft Publisher and the scanner.
    After we have a discussion about everyones
    brochure, I will have the students individually
    complete a crossword puzzle about Clara Barton as
    an assessment of what they learn through the
    activity.
