• Background
• Church is spreading growing.
• It is splintering from Judaism.
• Threat of splintering would be lessened if the
  Jews Gentiles agreed to keep the Mosaic law.
• Roman law did not permit the establishment of new
  religions

• The Controversy, Acts 151-2
• Judiazers, Demanded that Gentiles first become
  Jews before becoming Christians. They taught that
  the OT was the revealed Word of God and therefore
  its command were obligatory upon all who sought
  to live according to the divine will.
• Paul, etc., Argued that the observance of of such
  external obligations proved unavailing in his own
  spiritual odyssey and the OT spoke of Abraham as
  justified by faith long before the Mosaic law had
  been promulgated.

• Promote unity
• Requested concessions for the maintaining of
  unity
• It granted freedom form the Mosaic law as a
  requirement for salvation.
• Opened the way for the establishment of a
  universal Christianity.
• Paul Barnabas return to Antioch.

The Jerusalem Council Galatians

• The letter to The Galatians was written to the
  churches in Southern Galatia and deals with the
  controversy which gave rise to the Jerusalem
  Council.
• Galatians was written prior to the Jerusalem
  Council, c. 48-49 A.D. The letter contains no
  reference to the Councils decision, see Gal.
  211-21.
