1
Delivering Value Today and Tomorrow
2
  • Maximizing resources through a global
    network of materials specialists

3
Who is MTI?
MTI is the leading international non-profit
professional association serving the materials
technology needs of the Chemical Processing
Industry. Formed in 1977 - 16 member
companies Currently 56 member companies
4
Who is MTI?
MTI provides leadership and vision for the
current and future materials technology needs of
the CPI. Our networking, research projects,
and technical forums create value for members
companies while contributing to important vision
documents such as the 2003 Technology Roadmap.
5
Why was MTI Organized?
  • Chemical companies were working independently on
  • similar process equipment materials problems.
  • Existing associations were not set up for
multi-sponsor projects and had no funding
    available.
  • Member companies quickly identify needs and
cooperate to sponsor projects of mutual interest.

6
Who are our members?
Our membership includes leading manufacturers and
suppliers from throughout the world represented
by materials, chemical and mechanical engineers
as well as chemists, researchers and designers.
7
Who are our members?
MTI is International in scope with members in
Europe Canada
Asia America MTI
serves a variety of industries Chemical

MTI has many impressive accomplishments
  • Funded 157 Projects
  • Spent over 6 million on projects
  • Leveraged funding of millions more through DOE
  • Maintains database of over 2100 technical forum
    discussions
  • Published over 80 books and reports
  • Conducted Symposia on Tanks, Piping, Heat
    Exchangers,
  • Fluoropolymers, Transport Containers
  • Developed corrosion prediction software
  • Shared production of corrosion and materials
    awareness
  • training videos
  • Developed the Roadmap for Process Equipment
    Materials
  • Technology

12
MTI provides leadership in materials technology
to improve
1. Reliability2. Profitability3. Safety
13
1. Reliability
Equipment reliability is one of the three central
themes of MTI activities. Projects, forum
discussions and MTI products frequently focus on
mechanical integrity and equipment reliability
issues. Improving process efficiencies while
maintaining continued operation provides valuable
benefits for member companies, including higher
yields, reduced maintenance costs, less downtime
and lower turn-around costs.
14
2. Profitability
MTI membership increases profitability in several
ways. In addition to the reduced downtime
associated with equipment reliability, member
company profitability is further improved by
- Quicker assessment of industry need -
Reduced RD costs through leveraged knowledge
- Co-operative funding of research projects -
Cutting edge information on technology and
solutions - Bottom line cost reductions -
Reduced in-house expertise required
15
2. Profitability cont.
Most MTI members consider membership the
equivalent of 1-3 engineers and/or researchers
on staff.
16
3. Safety
Safety of employees, the environment and
neighboring communities is a paramount concern
within MTI. Member representatives work to
ensure the safety of member company employees not
only during equipment operation but also during
inspection and maintenance. Activities also
focus on operating chemical processes safely in
order to continue as responsible members of our
communities and the world.
17

18
How do we deliver value to your company?
  • 1. Technology Leadership- MTI developed the
    Roadmap for Process
  • Equipment Materials Technology to respond
    to emerging trends and
  • technical needs of the CPI.
  • MTI helps us to better
understand the Roadmap of the Chemical
  • Industry, and provides us
    an opportunity to be involved
  • 2. Safety/Reliability Solutions- for static
    and rotating equipment,
  • Instrumentation, piping, heat
    exchangers and utilities.
  • 3. Networking power- leverages resources of MTI
    members, technical
  • organizations, universities and consortia.

19
How do we deliver MORE value to your company?
4. Research- sponsored and programmed through
numerous advisory groups. 5.
Knowledge bank- MTI identifies, develops and
disseminates technical materials information.
Our web site links to a technical database of
research projects, forum archives and materials
industry links MTI provides a
collaborative atmosphere of
sharing knowledge and performing practical
research to benefit the industry.
20
How do we deliver MORE value to your company?
  • 6. Efficiency- in identifying problems and
    obtaining solutions through the
  • helpful and cooperative culture that is
    MTI.
  • 7. Technical forums- on our web site and at
    meetings to facilitate the
  • transfer of non-proprietary materials
    information.
  • Industry Influence- over development and use of
    applicable codes,
  • standards and regulations.

21
How do we deliver MORE value to your company?
  • 9. Leveraged Funding-MTI pools the resources of
    like-minded companies, directly sponsors, or
leverages other funding sources to solve
problems in the chemical process industry that
might otherwise not be adequately addressed due
    to their up-front costs.
  • Types of Projects
  • Materials selection advisor software
  • Mechanical integrity and reliability
  • Non-metallic materials
  • State of the art technology summaries
  • Regulation, codes and standards
  • Symposia
  • Technology assessment and communication
  • Technology development

22
How do we deliver MORE value to your company?
10. Trends Monitoring- MTI monitors trends
impacting materials of construction -
energy - environment - new materials -
information technology
-workforce - global economics - process
conditions. 11. Economic/ROI Benefits- MTI
offers active member companies a
significant ROI by providing knowledge and
resources that improve Manufacturing
efficiency, safety, and technical capabilities.
All while reducing operating expenses.
Benefit increased uptime, reduced
costs and new opportunities in
