5The Seed of the IWG
6FAA Request to RAeS November 2005
7FFS Current Status
Not quite harmonized
8Lower Levels FSTDs Current Status
Far from Harmonization
9Ed Cooks (FAA) Request to Industry
- RAeS agreed to facilitate
- IWGLargest Harmonization Effort Ever in Our
Industry - Strong industry endorsement

- Identify Training, Testing Checking Tasks
accomplished in FSTDs, including ICAO MPL tasks - Determine level of fidelity of simulation
required for each task - Note GREAT to start from training needs!
- Review current ICAO 9625 criteria and resolve
issues. - With other sub WG, identify FSTD Types and
Levels - Define Qualification Requirements for all FSTD
Types Levels - Note less types and levels predicted
11Inaugural IWG Meeting - Montreal
- June 2006 at ICAO HQ
- full support by ICAO for the project and the
firm plan to publish the IWG results as ICAO
documentation. - - Paul Lamy, Chief Flight Safety Section, ICAO
- 68 delegates representing our industry
- 11 countries
- 15 regulators from 7 countries
- Airplane simulator manufacturers
- Training providers
- Data suppliers researchers
- ICAOs full support
- Good industry representation

15FSTD Qualification Criteria Sub WG
- Started to review current ICAO 9625 doc. (level
II FFS) for - Harmonization clarification
- Evolution of technologies training needs
- Clarification of some regulatory aspects
- Launched 4 Task Teams for main categories of
issues - Motion (e.g. Testing of motion cuing and
algorithms, new technology, secondary systems,
latency throughput) - Visual (e.g. Implication of New technologies
motion blur, contrast ratio, black level,
speckle EVS) - Validation Tests (170 items with the aim of
clarifying and improving current tests) - Regulatory Matters (e.g. tolerances, use of
engineering data, Guidance Material for EFB, HUD,
EVS, Tailstrike and Upset recovery)
16Desired output from Pilot Training Sub WG
- Provide a perspective of the Training Needs
- Analysis of the level of fidelity required for
- Each training task (over 200) in current JAA and
FAA documents e.g. 2.5.7 Uses standard
communication procedures. - Each Training Course (12), e.g. MPL 1-4, Ratings
and License - Each Training Feature (13) e.g. Cockpit, Flight
Controls, Sound, Motion, Visual - 4 Levels of Fidelity currently being used
- None, Generic, Representative and Specific
17Desired output from Pilot Training Sub WG
- Result will be a matrix indicating fidelity
required for each training task and course.
Example format -
18Training Credits Task Group - Summary
Analysis Flow Diagram
Features (12)
Task (ICAOFAA) (200)
Training (T)
Assigned Fidelity Levels (NGRS)
Consolidation, Roll-up of matrix to a number of
defined types
Proficiency (TP)

Technical Testing Requirements for defined
devices
19Summary
- Multiple Standards and Stakeholders,
Harmonization is a necessity (cost and quality) - IWG is the largest harmonization effort ever
- Transparent Process (web forum)
- 2 phases Airplanes and Helicopters
- Includes a training needs analysis
- Will result in new ICAO documentation
- Presentation of Airplane Draft Document planned
for November 7/8th 2007 RAeS conference
20Royal Aeronautical Society
- Next Conferences
-
- Availability, Interoperability and Portability
- of Flight Simulation Data Achieving the Dream
