    developments in practice.

7
How?
Build capacity
Enhance quality
Transfer good practice
8
Building capacity
  • Supported EU elearning project bids to the value
    of 3M

X4L - JISC rationale
  • X4L has been motivated by the imperative to make
the most of the considerable investment that has
taken place in a range of content which has high
potential value for use in learning. X4L is lead
by 25 projects from across the UK and involves
more than 100 institutions and teams from
    colleges, universities, libraries, JISC services,
    local authorities and commercial companies.

27
X4L objectives
  • To use and develop the best available tools to
explore whether repurposing content can become a
popular, sustainable way of producing e-learning
    materials for the future
  • To increase the numbers of people in institutions
with the necessary skills to repurpose learning
    objects
  • To expose and begin to tackle the challenges
associated with repurposing learning objects and
  • To begin to populate a national repository with
reusable learning materials, case studies and
    exemplars.

28
Learning objects
  • A learning object is defined... as any entity,
digital or non-digital, that can be used, re-used
    or referenced during technology-supported
    learning.
  • IEEE Draft Standard for Learning Object Metadata
    (July 2002)
  • learning-objects_at_jiscmail.ac.uk

ACETS
  • Collaboration University of Edinburgh,
University of Cambridge, University of Newcastle,
    University of Birmingham, University of
Nottingham, Telford College and Suffolk College
  • 3 years from 2003
  • Releasing content
  • Avoid reinventing that wheel - again!

1
Covering all areas of healthcare education, from
Medicine to Beauty Therapy, ACETS is
investigating the reuse of digital learning
materials in situated teaching contexts by
commissioning exemplars of learning objects
embedded in the teaching and learning practices
of academics and teachers.
31
2
The ACETS exemplar has three components 1
formal statement of learning design - this is to
facilitate a degree of transferability and
analysis of object use across different teaching
and learning scenarios 2 reflective diary of
experiences and evaluations of the materials and
their educational efficacy 3 any materials
created (optional)
32
3
  • ACETS is recruiting around 30 academics and
teachers from a wide range of disciplines to
create our exemplars. The process is
  • baseline survey to establish experience, local
    support and expectations
  • resource discovery, observing and capturing
    techniques, identifying academic-selected
materials against broad academic needs and
    interests
  • object acquisition, upload and cataloguing in
    repository
  • academics create exemplars and on completion
    return them to the project
  • exemplars are analysed and evaluated in
    different teaching contexts

33
4
  • ACETS has a strong research focus
  • baseline surveys yield contextual information
for evaluating the exemplar - a well experienced
and supported teachers might be expected to
produce larger and more complex exemplars
  • resource discovery analysis yields patterns and
issues with busy teachers finding and acquiring
    reusable learning materials
  • learning design, based on EML/IMS LD is an
attempt to create a user-friendly way of formally
expressing a teaching scenario that can be
    analysed and reused
  • reflective diaries capture the complex, emergent
and situated experiences of teachers, their
problems and successes and their perspectives and
    expectations.

34
5
ACETS members share a Collaborative Work
Environment to enable the 50 or so staff involved
to communicate, share materials and log
experiences and ideas. Two areas of content to be
tested Anatomy and Communication skills
