  conditions, other difficult areas neglected,
  long delays, variations between countries
• Right to best procedure/treatment
• Centres of reference/excellence- surgical
  expertise etc
• Collaboration, observation and monitoring of
  standards across borders

What do patients want to know ?

• To know what they are facing is expertise
  available locally or do they need to go further
  afield
• Access to the establishment/treatment that will
  provide the best care- How safe is the care ?
  experience of surgeon ? success rates ?
• Is pain relief a priority ? (it is in some
  countries )
• Access to the full medical record ( high priority
  in law in some countries )
• Conciliation and compensation mechanisms ( no
  blame)

Patient Safety what is important ?

• Guidelines for care and quality (eg. JCAHO)
• Infection (example 50 reduction in HAI)
• Surgical training/dexterity/standards
• Operating theatre environment- equipment,
  communication, team briefing, positioning of
  patient
• Anaesthesia
• Legible/typed/videoed documentation of findings
• Long term follow up. Outcomes published.
• Patient reporting of adverse events. Pain
  acute/chronic adhesions, sutures to nerves etc
