MSSC Background
  • 1998 Recognized by the federal National Skill
Standards Board (NSSB) as the Voluntary
    Partnership for manufacturing
  • Responsible under National Skill Standards Act
    for developing industry-led standards,
    assessments and certifications
  • Uniquely applicable to all production
occupations, entry-level through first line of
    supervision, in all manufacturing sectors
  • 2001 NSSB formally endorsed MSSC standards.
    Standards development involved 700 companies,
    4000 front-line workers, 300 experts, 9 million
    public private funds

MSSC Background contd.
  • Link to Federal Resources
  • -- MSSC Standards used as the basis for
    Department of Labors Advanced Manufacturing
Competencies, now required for DOL/ETA funding
  • -- MSSC Standards and Industry
Certifications used as the basis for Perkins
    Manufacturing Career Cluster knowledge and
skills, now required for DoED/OVAE funding
  • 2001 to Present - MSSC built state-of-the-art,
comprehensive system of training, assessment and
    certifications for production workforce
    Certified Production Technician (CPT)
  • 2007 MSSC received DOL grant to develop
    analogous system for Certified Logistics
    Associate (CLA) and Certified Logistics
    Technician (CLT)

MSSC Strategy
  • Deploy nationwide system of training, assessment
    and certification--based on federally endorsed,
    industry-led, nationally validated MSSC standards
  • Example Successful ASE (Automotive Service
    Excellence) certification-- the standard for
    automotive repair technicians
  • Goal Build nationwide pool of MSSC-Certified
    Production Technicians (CPT), Certified
    Logistics Associates (CLA) and Certified
    Logistics Technicians (CLT)
  • Focus Core competencies needed for flexible,
    multi-disciplinary worker using more technology
to make crucial decisions more quickly.
    (Harcourt Assessments, 2007)
