Reproduction
  • After a male and female emperor penguin have a
courtship for several weeks, the female lays a
single egg then leaves for a fishing hunt.
  • The males balance the egg on their feet for 65
days straight until the females return.
  • The brood pouch of the male keeps the egg warm
    during the eggs nesting.
  • Emperor penguins reproduce sexually.

4
Breeding!
  • Most penguins leave in March which is when winter
    arrives.
  • The only type of penguins that does not is the
    emperor penguin.
  • The emperor penguins breed in the winter, unlike
all the other penguins who breeds in the spring.

5
Feeding
  • As the young penguins grow, the parents leave the
young in a crèche, groups of chicks, as they
    leave for fishing.
  • Emperor penguins feed their young by
regurgitating the food into the chicks mouth.
  • An emperor penguins diet mainly consists of
    crustaceans, fish, squid and cephalopods.

6
Habitat
  • Emperor penguins live in colonies on packed ice
    in Antarctica.
  • They breed on the ice edge of the Antarctic
    coast.
  • Some rarely breed on land.

7
Facts!
  • Emperor penguins can dive the deepest of any
    bird.
  • They can dive up to 565 meters.
  • They can stay under water for up to 22 minutes.
  • Because they are very strong birds, their
strength makes them very good predators.

8
Penguin Evolution!
  • Birds of all types evolved from reptiles about
150 to 200 million years ago during the time when
    dinosaurs still exists.
  • Since this time a total of 150,000 species of
birds is estimated to have inhabited the earth.

9
Predators
  • Leopard seals
  • Large sharks

10
Did you know
  • that ice cliffs and icebergs provide shelter from
