AFRICAN ELEPHANT

2
How it looks
  •   The animal that we chose for our power
point is the African elephant . An African
elephants large ears help to keep it cool.
African elephants live in hotter , drier
places and need more cooling than the
    smaller eared Indian elephants .

3
  • The blood from and elephants body is
carried through its ears by many blood
vessels that are close to the
surface. This cools the ears and the blood
flows to the rest of the body cooled as well.
Big ears cool blood faster. The ears of a big
African elephant can each weigh 110 pounds.

4
  • As the name suggests, African elephants live in
Africa. African elephants used to roam all parts
of Africa. Today they live in the southern parts
of Africa. African elephants live where food and
    water can be found.

5
  • The African elephants eat roots, grass
    ,leaves, fruit , and bark.

6
  • African elephants also eat vegetables. They are
very strong so they grab their food with those
long trunks they have. The trunk goes up to
search for their tasty leaves. They eat
    enormously!

7
Calves
  • African elephants are born after a 20 to 22
month gestation, the longest in nature.
Scientists have found that elephants who do not
have enough to eat take longer to reach adult
    size.

8
calves
  • This means that female elephants often do not
have calves until they are about eighteen years
    old .

9
  • Elephants normally have a calf every four years,
but now, many only have the strength to have one
calf every eight years. Scientists are studying
ways of making sure elephants in the reserves
    eat well.

10
  • Then they will be strong enough to produce
healthy calves to continue the species.

POWERFUL
11
  • When a baby elephant is about to be born, its
mother invites one of her friends to come and
    help.

12
  • But first it must learn to get along with its
own trunk. It always seems to be getting in its
    way.

13
  • Elephants have the largest brain size verses body
    weight other than man.
