Title: Endocrine system

1
Endocrine system
  • ByLiliana Alvarez
  • and Mirna Blanco

2
The endocrine system
  • It is in charge of the whole body of what happens
    to it
  • Even though the nervous system and the endocrine
are different systems they usually work together
    in many times.
  • Endocrine glands release more than 20 major
    hormones into the blood stream

3
What it produces
  • Growth hormone- stimulates the growth of bone and
    other body tissues.
  • Prolactin- Activates milk production in women who
    are breastfeeding.
  • Thyrotropin- Stimulates the thyroid gland to
    produce thyroid hormones.
  • Corticotrophin- Stimulates the adrenal gland to
    produce certain hormones.

4
Hormones and what they do
  • They are chemical messengers that travel through
    the body
  • It helps with growth metabolism and fertility
  • Before birth they help develop the brain and
    reproductive system
  • Hormones are the ones that decide how your body
    is going to be like
  • For example, your legs are the same length and
your arms all because of hormones

5
Negative feed back loop
  • if there is a data that produces a result in the
    opposite directions its a negative.
  • The affects that they have depends on the system.
  • They can have different behavior
  • They have exponential growth or decline
  • There is maintenance of equilibrium.

6
Blood glucose
  • The levels of glucose have to stay the same
  • The body regulates blood sugar levels using two
    mechanisms hunger and insulin
  • When the blood glucose falls it cause people to
    be hungry
  • If we dont eat then the blood glucose falls to
low and it cause us to have hypoglycemia
  • When our blood-glucose levels rise, the brain
tells our pancreas to release insulin
  • Without insulin the amount of sugar in our blood
    can become toxic

7
Vocabulary
  • Hormones- A substance, usually a peptide or
    steroid produced by one tissue
  • homeostasis- The ability or tendency of an
organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium
  • Thyroid gland- A two-lobed tendency of an
    organism or cell
  • Adrenal gland- Either of two small, dissimilarly
shaped endocrine glands, one located above each
    kidney.
  • Pancreas- A long irregularly shaped gland in
    vertebrates, lying behind the stomach.
  • Pineal gland- A small, cone-shaped organ in the
brain of most vertebrates that secretes the
    hormone melatonin.
  • Parathyroid glands- Any of usually four small
kidney-shaped glands that lie in pairs near or
    within the posterior surface.
  • Thymus- A small glandular organ that is situated
behind the top of the breastbone.
  • Ovary- The ovule bearing louver part of a pistil
    that ripens into a fruit.
  • Testis- An analogous gland in an invertebrate
animal, such as a hydra or a mollusk.
  • Pituitary gland- Master gland of the endocrine
    system

8
Continued
  • Hypothalamus- A basal part of the diencephalons
    covering the automatic nervous system.
  • Epinephrine- A catecholamine secreted by the
adrenal medulla in response to stress.
  • Nor epinephrine- A catecholamine precursor of
epinephrine that is secreted by the adrenal
medulla and also released at synapses.
  • Insulin- Hormone secreted by the isles of longer
    Hans in the pancreas.
  • Glucagons- A hormone produced by the pancreas
that stimulates on increase in blood sugar
    levels.
  • Growth hormone- A hormone produced by the
anterior pituitary gland promotes growth in
    humans.
