When was the
colosseum built?
  • The Colloseum was built about 2000 years ago

words and facts to find.
  • Romans built amphitheaters for entertainment.
Gladiator battles and animal fights were among
the events held there. The Colosseum was no
exception. The Emperor Vespasian commissioned the
amphitheater in AD72, in an area that was once a
marsh. The land was cleared and the Colosseum was
erected, and when completed, it could hold up to
55,000 spectators. Vespasian's son Titus held an
inauguration festival in AD 80 that lasted for
100 days. The design was so practical, with
eighty numbered entrances and stairways leading
to specific platforms, that patrons could enter
their specific marked entrance, and be in their
seat within ten minutes. Seating was
predetermined depending on your social status at
the time. The wealthier you were, the closer you
could sit to the Emperor. Different social
classes were completely segregated. The slaves
were sometimes allowed to stand at the top level
    to watch the events.

More facts
  • The Colosseum, which stands near the center of
present-day Rome, is perhaps the finest surviving
    example of ancient Roman architectural
engineering. One of the most famous ruins in the
world, thousands of tourists visit it every year.

7
More Facts
  • The Colosseum is shaped like a modern football
stadium and could seat 45,000 spectators. The
four-story facility is 161 feet high, about 600
feet long and 500 feet wide. Events such as
fights between gladiators and between men and
wild animals were held there. Awnings could be
hung from the walls to protect spectators from
    the sun.

8
More Facts
  • The oval-shaped, sand-covered floor of the arena
originally could be flooded for water spectacles.
Later, however, cages for people and animals were
installed beneath the arena. A wall separated the
arena from spectators whose seats rested on
sloping concrete supports as in many stadiums
    today.

9
Facts!
  • When you stand in the Roman Coliseum you will
feel the excitement that comes with knowing you
are standing in a structure that was built almost
    2,000 years ago.
