  • Geographical area 22,489 sq. km.
  • Population 25 lakh (approximately)
  • Total cropped area 2.76 lakh hectares
  • Major crops Paddy, Maize, Wheat and Pulses
    Mustard, Soybean, Cotton, Jute and Mesta.
  • Major Fruit crops Orange, Pine Apple, Banana,
    Pears, Plums, Peaches, Strawberries.
  • Spices Ginger, Turmeric and Chilli.
  • Plantation crops Tea, Cashew Nut and Areca Nut
  • Agro-climatic zones 5
  • Fertilizer consumption 17 kgs/ha.
  • Paddy productivity 1772 kg/ha.
  • Oilseed productivity 658 kg/ha.
  • Pulses productivity 756 kg/ha.
  • Mechanical Horse Power Availability 0.058
    HP/hectares.

Issues for discussion
  • Non-availability of suitable Paddy varieties for
    mid-altitude zones of Meghalaya (300 mts. To 600
    mts). High altitude zone varieties evolved by the
    ICAR (Megha Rice 1 2) have been successful.
  • Inconsistencies in the subsidising patterns
    between the Technology Mission on Horticulture
    and Macromanagement. Rs. 45,000 max under TM
    while under MM only Rs. 30,000 max. In the state
    scheme it is Rs. 50,000/-. Should be equalized.

PROGRAMMES STRATEGIES FOR RABI PRODUCTION
  • Mass awareness campaigns and farmers meets -
    proposed to be held at all the Sub-divisional and
    district headquarters.
  • Productivity challenges to be met by grounding
    380 Power tillers in time for the Rabi season -
    180 sanctioned under the Macro Management Scheme
    and 200 nos. under the TMH.
