farm cooperative in his state called the Cotton
Producers Association. By cooperating Brooks and
his members were able to save money, expand their
operations, and improve their products. At first
the group was interested in cotton production,
but gradually it expanded its interests to
include first fertilizer then feed for poultry
and finally into poultry production starting in
the 1940s. In 1972, the cooperative changed its
name to Gold Kist. D. W. Brooks Collection,

19Kennedy Assassination
20Senator Russells Warren Commission notes
Russells notes reflect his dissatisfaction with
the findings of the Warren Commission. Im the
only man that bucked the report, he said.
Russell objected to the original wording that
stated categorically there had been no conspiracy
involved in the assassination. He insisted the
report should go no further than finding that Lee
Harvey Oswald fired the shots that killed Kennedy
and wounded Governor John B. Connally of Texas.
Russell also disagreed with the theory that the
first bullet fired in Dallas assassination
wounded Kennedy and then Connally. The final
compromise on this point said the commission
found no evidence that Oswald was part of any
conspiracy, domestic or foreign. Richard B.
