Unit Plan
  • Bye ChrisAnn Poling

2
Introduction
  • This Unit Plan is going to be on Advanced
    Environmental Earth Science covering the
difference between rocks and minerals along with
eight common minerals and the three types of
rocks and how they are formed. Along with a
brief introduction to geologic mapping to have
the students be familiar with what these maps
look like and how to read them.

3
State ObjectivesWV CSOs (Content Standards and
Objectives)
  • AES.2.5 Conduct explorations in a variety of
    environments (e.g., laboratories, museums,
libraries, parks and other outdoors locations).
  • AES.2.7 Demonstrate science processes within a
    problem solving setting (e.g., observing,
    measuring, calculating, communicating, comparing,
    ordering, categorizing, classifying, relating,
    hypothesizing, predicting, inferring, considering
    alternatives, and applying).
  • AES.4.7 Identify the type and composition of
    various minerals.
  • AES.4.8 Investigate and explain the processes of
    the rock cycle.
  • AES.4.9 Explain the relationship between pressure
and temperature to the formation and reformation
    of rocks.
  • AES.4.10 Identify and describe agents and
processes of degradation (e.g., weathering by
    gravity, wind, water, and ice).
  • AES.5.5 Use appropriate technology solutions to
measure and gather data interpret data analyze
data and to present and communicate conclusions.

6
Utilizing Media and MaterialsDay 1
  • Start out by asking the children what they think
Geology is about and why its important to
    society.
  • Give handout of the rock cycle diagram and
    explain in full detail.
  • Discuss the three types of rocks (sed., meta.,
    and igneous).
  • Small class activity called Rock Cycle Dice,
which will help the students grasp the idea of
the rock cycle and how it works in different
    environments
  • Also, a brief discussion of the formation of
    rocks.

7
Utilizing Media and MaterialsDay 2
  • Review of rock cycle and go further in-depth
about formation and reformation of rocks on
    PowerPoint.
  • Discussion of the difference of minerals and
    rocks.
  • Eight most common types of minerals.
  • Discussion of the most common types of rocks and
    the compositions of some.
  • Activity, Albert the Metamorphic Rock. This
consists of them making a comic strip of the rock
    cycle.

8
Utilizing Media and MaterialsDay 3
  • PowerPoint introduction of Mohs hardness scale,
    along with the formation, crystallization,
    hardness, categorization, mineral composition,
    and naming of igneous rocks.
  • Activity small lab of the classification and
    identification of igneous rocks.
  • They will work in partners and make a chart of
    igneous rocks.

9
Utilizing Media and MaterialsDay 4 and 5
  • Day 4
  • PowerPoint discussion of Meta. Rocks (picture
references for lab), and how the rock cycle ties
    into igneous and meta rocks.
  • Activity small lab of classification and
    identification of Meta. Rocks.
  • Will work in partners to make a chart of Meta.
    Rocks.
  • Day 5
  • PowerPoint discussion on Sed. Rocks (picture
references for lab), and how the rock cycle ties
into all three types of rocks.
  • Activity small lab on the classification and
    identification of Sed. Rocks.
  • Will work in partners to make a chart of Sed.
    Rocks.

10
Utilizing Media and MaterialsDay 6
  • Working in groups they will make a large chart
and diagram of the combined three charts from the
    previous labs using Excel program.
  • I will provide them with detailed instruction of
how to use Excel incase they have forgotten or do
not know how to use the program.
  • After they have finished the Excel program they
will have a review crossword puzzle to complete.

11
Utilizing Media and MaterialsDay 7
  • Discussion of how weathering , erosion, wind,
water, and ice effects on rocks.
  • At the end of lecture there will be a slide show
of different types of weathering on rocks where
    class participation will be counted.
  • I will have made vocabulary flash cards to play
Jeopardy, as a class activity/game (bonus points
    rewarded to winners).

12
Utilizing Media and MaterialsDay 8
  • PowerPoint lecture on Geologic maps
  • We will then explore outside of the school to see
if we can find examples of each types of rocks.
  • Provide handouts of some other examples of the
importance of geology and rocks in everyday life,
    along with a class discussion.

13
Required Learner Participation
  • Provide different things for students to do each
    day such as
  • PowerPoint Lecture
  • Lab
  • Excel Program
  • Online word search
  • Flashcards
  • Jeopardy
  • Rock Cycle activity
  • Comic strip activity
  • Outside excursion

14
Evaluation and Revision
  • Students learning and achievement will be
evaluated by the comic strip, the three separate
charts on each rock type, the Excel program
chart, along with class participation of the
    Jeopardy game.
