  • In a list of numbers taken from real-life sources
    of data, the first digit will be 1 almost 30 of
    the time.
  • The rest of the numbers will fall in a
    logarithmic distribution

History
  • First written about by Simon Newcomb in 1881 when
    looking at dirt on books of logarithms
  • Rediscovered by Frank Benford in 1938
  • Benford tested the law on 20,229 sets of numbers
    including areas of rivers, baseball statistics,
    numbers in magazine articles and the street
    addresses of the first 342 people listed in the
    book "American Men of Science."
  • Proved by to Theodore Hill in 1988
