Le Quatorze Juillet
  • Jo Rhys-Jones (Kingswear Primary 2008)

  • On the 14th July 1789, there was a riot outside
    the Bastille prison in Paris.
  • The prison was stormed, the prisoners were freed
    and the governor was killed.

3
  • It was the start of the French Revolution.

4
  • Marianne is the symbol of France.
  • Do you know who or what are the symbols for
    Britain?
  • Or any other countries?

5
  • There were only 7 prisoners in the Bastille at
    the time.
  • You can find many strange facts about the
    Bastille prison from
  • http//www.chezjim.com/bastille/

6
So why did it start a revolution?

7
  • In 1789 most of the people of France were very
    poor and some were starving.
  • They were ruled by King Louis XVI and Queen
    Marie-Antoinette.

8
  • It is said they were so rich and so distanced
from the people, that when they were told
  • The people are starving, they have no bread
  • Marie-Antoinette replied.

9
Let them eat cake
  • Why do you think she may have said that?

10
  • The King and Queen were executed along with
many other nobles and aristocrats during the
Revolution and years of Terror that followed.

11
  • After the revolution a document was drawn up,
    declaring the rights of citizens.
  • It stated that
  • all men are equal

12
  • A song was written called La Marseillaise. It
    is the French national anthem.
  • You can hear it and read the lyrics at
  • http//www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/marseill.html

13
