Blu-ray Disc Overview
7
HDTV
  • HDTV is offering a screenresolution 6x higher
    than PAL or SECAM
  • 1920x1080 pixels (max.)
  • Amount of video data per minute 6x that of
    standard TV.
  • A regular DVD can hold only 20 minutes HD footage
  • Only BD is offering enough capacity for full HD
    video quality

Why Can Blue Laser Expand Capacity?
Minimising track pitch maximises recording
density.
11

TDKs Advanced Technology

TDK Technology in the Blu-ray Disc
Ultra smooth forming of the cover layer
High-precision spin coating technology
Safeguarding the disc recording surface from
scratches and dirt
DURABIS 2 technology

22
Spin Coating Technology
Ultra-smooth cover layer
If the precision or smoothness of the cover layer
is irregular, the minute blue-violet laser beam
measuring 405nm would not penetrate
correctly. Consequently the laser beam will not
irradiate the recording layer accurately.
TDK developed an original spin coating method to
form the cover layer precisely, and utilises this
for the Blu-ray Disc.
Spin coating
Liquid resin, for the cover layer, is dropped
onto a rotating disc.
The disc is spun rapidly, and the resin is spread
outwards by centrifugal force.
A 0.1mm thick resin spread uniformly over the
entire disc surface then hardens.

TDK Blu-ray Disc (Stable waveform)
Disc having cover layer with poor
precision (Waveform is unstable)
Because the cover layer of the TDK Blu-ray Disc
is extremely uniform in thickness and possesses
superb smoothness, an outstanding focus servo
signal can be obtained.
This makes possible stabilized recording and
playback (RF signal).

Scratch Resistance
DURABIS technology that safeguards data with a
robust coating
DURABIS 2 coating boasts superior resistance to
scratches
Here is a comparison of disc surfaces after
rubbing with a steel wool pad. The disc using a
DURABIS 2 coating is virtually free of scratches.
