Title: Election and Predestination

1
Election and Predestination
  • Sound Doctrines
  • Wednesday Night
  • Bible Class
  • Deborah Merritt

2
The Sovereignty of God Dan 435
  • All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as
    nothing
  • He does according to His will in the army of
    heaven
  • And among the inhabitants of the earth.
  • No one can restrain His hand
  • Or say to Him," What have You done?"

3
The Sovereignty of God Ps 1153
  • But our God is in heaven
  • He does whatever He pleases.

4
The Sovereignty of God
  • Says that God is
  • The Supreme ( is King and is God)
  • The Potentate
  • The Almighty (the possessor of all power in
    heaven and earth)
  • The Most High ( high and exalted)
  • The Governor of nations

5
The Sovereignty of God
  • Says that God is not
  • Disappointed
  • Dis-satisfied (Unsatisfied)
  • Defeated
  • Dethroned
  • Disgraced

6
The Sovereignty of God
  • Says that God is
  • Absolute
  • Irresistible
  • Infinite

7
The Sovereignty of God
  • and the Christian Doctrines of Salvation are
  • Election
  • Predestination
  • Foreknowledge
  • Adoption

8
Question?
  • Why did God really create the world and humanity?
  • Prov 164
  • The LORD has made all for Himself,
  • Yes, even the wicked for the day of doom.
  • Rev 411
  • 11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and
honour and power for thou hast created all
things, and for thy pleasure they are and were
    created.

9
The Sovereign God accomplishes this by
  • Eph 111-12
  • 11 In him we were also chosen, having been
predestined according to the plan of him who
works out everything in conformity with the
    purpose of his will,
  • 12 in order that we, who were the first to hope
in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.

10
Apprehension of the Sovereignty of God
  • Promotes a genuine spirit of Wor(th)ship
  • Provides an attitude of practical godliness
  • Is a deeply humbling experience
  • Inspires zeal for service
  • Brings great comfort of heart
  • Strengthens our souls

11
  • Rom 911-23
  • 11(For the children being not yet born, neither
having done any good or evil, that the purpose of
God according to election might stand, not of
works, but of him that calleth)
  • 12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve
    the younger.
  • 13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau
    have I hated.
  • 14 What shall we say then? Is there
    unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
  • 15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on
whom I will have mercy, and I will have
compassion on whom I will have compassion.
  • 16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of
him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
  • 17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for
this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I
might shew my power in thee, and that my name
might be declared throughout all the earth.

12
  • 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have
mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
  • 19Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet
find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
  • 20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest
against God? Shall the thing formed say to him
that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
  • 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of
the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and
    another unto dishonor?
  • 22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to
make his power known, endured with much
longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to
    destruction
  • 23 And that he might make known the riches of his
glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore
    prepared unto glory,

13
Election
  • 2 Tim 210
  • 10 Therefore I endure all things for the sake of
the elect, that they also may obtain the
salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal
    glory.

14
Election means that God made a choice, selection
or separation
  • Questions
  • Are we all blessed by God with a fair
distribution of gifts, abilities, talents, etc.?
  • Are we all blessed by God with a fair
    distribution of health, prosperity, power,
    potential, beauty, strength, weakness?
  • Matt 2015-16
  • 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with
mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
  • 16 So the last shall be first, and the first
    last
  • for many be called, but few chosen.

15
Election means God ordained some to believe
  • Acts 1348
  • And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad
and glorified the word of the Lord and as many
as were ordained to eternal life believed.

16
God always has a people chosen, elected or
separated to believe him
  • Rom 111-8
  • 1 I say then, has God cast away His people?
Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the
seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
  • 2 God has not cast away His people whom He
foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture
says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against
    Israel, saying,
  • 3 "LORD, they have killed Your prophets and torn
down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they
    seek my life"?
  • 4 But what does the divine response say to him?
"I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men
who have not bowed the knee to Baal."

17
  • Rom 115
  • 5 Even so then, at this present time there is
a remnant according to the election of grace
  • 7 What then? Israel has not obtained what it
seeks but the elect have obtained it, and the
    rest were blinded.
  • 8 Just as it is written
  • "God has given them a spirit of stupor
  • Eyes that they should not see
  • And ears that they should not hear,
  • To this very day."

18
The elect (even Gentiles) are ordained to eternal
life
  • They were selected, chosen and ordained as,
  • a remnant according to the favor of God for
the specific reason of, "eternal life .
  • Because this select group was reserved, ordained
or selected to eternal life, they BELIEVED the
gospel message of salvation, when they heard
    it.
  • And then they celebrated, because they had been
selected to eternal life and given the faith to
    believe.

19
Chosen to Salvation
  • 2 Thessalonians 2 13
  • But we are bound to give thanks always to God
for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because
God hath from the beginning! chosen you to
salvation through sanctification of the Spirit
    and belief of the truth

20
Chosen, selected and reserved for Salvation
  • Chosen from the beginning for Salvation
  • How?
  • Through
  • Sanctification of Spirit
  • Belief in the Truth
  • So then,
  • We are bound to give thanks!

21
He elected us in Eternity (before the world was
created)
  • 2 Timothy 1 9
  • Who hath saved us,
  • and called us with a holy calling,
  • not according to our works,
  • but according to his own purpose and grace,
  • which was given us in Christ Jesus
  • before the world began...

22
Elected unto obedience because of the
foreordained blood of Jesus
  • 1Pet.12
  • Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the
    Father,
  • through sanctification of the spirit unto
    obedience
  • and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ
  • Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied!

23
2 Categories of the Elect
  • Corporate Election
  • for salvation of humanity
  • Ps 1354
  • 4 For the LORD has chosen Jacob for Himself,
    Israel for His special treasure.
  • Isa 454
  • 4 For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine
elect, I have even called thee by thy name I
have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known
    me.

24
  • Personal or Individual Election
  • for service to humanity
  • which gives the passion to do what you do!
  • Acts 915-16
  • 15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way
for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my
name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the
    children of Israel
  • 16 For I will shew him how great things he
must suffer for my name's sake.

25
Gods method of dealing with the elect
  • God exerts upon his elect influence and power
  • To quicken - bringing them from death to life
  • to energize enabling them to fight the good
    fight of faith
  • To direct ordering righteous steps
  • To preserve keeping us in our daily walk of
    faith

26
Predestination
  • Greek word-Proorizo to limit in advance to
    predetermine or decide before
  • to ordain, to mark before

27
Eph 111-14
  • 11 In him we were also chosen, having been
predestined according to the plan of him who
works out everything in conformity with the
    purpose of his will,
  • 12 in order that we, who were the first to hope
in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.
  • 13 And you also were included in Christ when you
heard the word of truth, the gospel of your
salvation. Having believed, you were marked in
him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
  • 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance
until the redemption of those who are God's
possession-to the praise of his glory.

28
Rom 828-30
  • 28 And we know that all things work together for
good to those who love God, to those who are the
    called according to His purpose.
  • 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to
be conformed to the image of His Son, that He
might be the firstborn among many brethren.
  • 30 Moreover whom He predestined,
  • these He also called whom He called,
  • these He also justified and whom He justified,
  • these He also glorified.

29
Who is regulating the affairs of this earth
today, God or the Devil?
  • Emphatically, God is.
  • As the architect and master-builder
  • God provided the precision of his creation with
all the plans, details and programming before he
    started to create.
  • He also chose all the players and predetermined
their assignments before he ever created them.
  • God continues to regulate his creation, by
working from his preordained purpose and plan
  • Gods purpose is to glorify himself!

30
God established his plan by an irreversible decree
  • Job 2228
  • Thou shalt also decree a thing,
  • and it shall be established unto thee
  • and the light shall shine upon thy
  • ways.

31
Who is regulating the affairs of the earth,
today?
  • Isa 1426-27
  • 26 This is the purpose that is purposed upon the
    whole earth
  • and this is the hand that is stretched out
    upon all the nations.
  • 27 For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who
shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out,
and who shall turn it back?

32
Christ was predestined as the sin-bearer
  • Acts 427-28 The prayer of the Apostles
  • 27 "For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus,
whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate,
with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were
    gathered together
  • 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose
    determined before to be done.

33
God used predestined decrees to bring things to
pass in the life of believers (in Christ)
  • Conform to the image of his son (Christ)- to be
    the firstborn among many brethren
  • Share His glory- we are called, justified and
    glorified
  • Manifestation as the sons of God we shall be
    just like him
  • Entrance into our inheritance we have obtained
    an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled

34
Eph 12-23
  • 2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our
Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual
blessings in heavenly places in Christ
  • 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before
the foundation of the world, that we should be
holy and without blame before him in love
  • 5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of
children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to
the good pleasure of his will,

35
  • 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace,
wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
  • 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood,
the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches
    of his grace
  • 8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all
    wisdom and prudence
  • 9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his
will, according to his good pleasure which he
    hath purposed in himself
  • 10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of
times he might gather together in one all things
in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which
are on earth even in him

36
  • 11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance,
being predestinated according to the purpose of
him who worketh all things after the counsel of
    his own will
  • 12 That we should be to the praise of his glory,
    who first trusted in Christ.
  • 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard
the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation
in whom also after that ye believed, ye were
sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
  • 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until
the redemption of the purchased possession, unto
    the praise of his glory.

37
  • 15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith
in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
  • 16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making
mention of you in my prayers
  • 17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of
wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him
  • 18 The eyes of your understanding being
enlightened that ye may know what is the hope of
his calling, and what the riches of the glory of
    his inheritance in the saints,
  • 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his
power to usward who believe, according to the
    working of his mighty power,

38
  • 20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him
from the dead, and set him at his own right hand
    in the heavenly places,
  • 21 Far above all principality, and power, and
might, and dominion, and every name that is
named, not only in this world, but also in that
    which is to come
  • 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and
gave him to be the head over all things to the
    church,
  • 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that
    filleth all in all.
