.Characters.
  • Bud Caldwell - A ten year old motherless boy,
    trying to find his father.
  • Herman E. Calloway - Famous musician Buds
    Grandfather.
  • Dusky Devastators of the Depression - Herman E.
    Calloways Band.
  • Miss Thomas - The bands style vocalist.

3
Plt
  • The book was about an African American boy named
Bud Caldwell, who escapes from his foster home
after he was beaten up by their older son. He
travels with his suitcase of belongings of his
mother (who had passed) The suitcase contained
flyers, rocks, blanket, pictures. He believes
his mother left him clues that the famous
musician Herman E. Calloway was his father. Bud
Caldwell leaves Flint, Michigan and heads off
    for Grand Rapids.

4
Conflict
  • There were many little conflicts in the story,
but I think the biggest one was
  • when Bud arrives at Herman E. Calloways house
and Herman denies that hes Buds father.

5
Resolution
  • The problem was solved when Bud said his
mothers name. Herman immediately knew they were
not father son but Bud was his grandson.
  • Herman did not know this because Buds mother
ran away when she was younger. He did not know
    Bud even existed.

6
African American History
  • This book took place in 1932. This was the time
of the Great Depression. The book helped me
understand more about this time in history. It
was a hard time for African Americans, let alone
a hard time for white Americans to find food and
    jobs.

7
African American History
  • The book helped me understand the Great
Depression. In the story Bud had to eat at a soup
kitchen because he could not afford food on his
    own.
  • Herman E. Calloway always has at least one white
person in his band so they could get more job
    offers.

8
African American History Cont.
  • When Bud was riding in a car they got pulled
over, He noticed the cop wasnt black because
African Americans didnt have nice jobs like that
    back then.
  • Some of the names people called Bud they were
    not appropriate or nice.

9
Theme
  • I think the theme of the book is to trust your
instincts, even when others dont believe in you.
  • Bud believed that him Herman E. Calloway
looked alike, even when others said he didnt.

10
Ratings
  • The book was ok, it taught me more about African
American history, but it after awhile it just
seemed to get boring. I give it one star out of
    four.
