  • Ontario Trails Strategy
  • A long-term plan that establishes a strategic
direction for government and stakeholders on the
planning, management, promotion and use of
trails, toward a healthier and more prosperous
    Ontario.

  • There is a need for accessible information for
trails in Ontario allowing for users, trail
    organizations and local/provincial governments
  • to locate provincial map information and
    responsible trail organizations
  • to determine what types of trails exist
  • to further analysis and planning
  • to promote and educate trail users by providing
    access to trail information

3

  • OTN can hold information about all types trails
  • Trails with natural or treated surfaces
  • On-road bicycle routes
  • Walkways, boardwalks and sidewalks
  • Trails located on transportation and utility
    corridors
  • Access roads designated for trail use
  • Trails integrated with public transit services
  • Waterway routes and portage routes

4
5
  • MOU signed in 2006 between MHP and Land
Information Ontario (MNR) to lead mapping phase
    of the trails strategy.
  • Undertake inventory of trails and mapping data
  • Develop trail data and data collection standards
  • Establish data collection priorities
  • Implement data sharing agreements
  • Create a geospatial database of Ontario trails
  • Create ongoing trail data maintenance processes
  • Report to the a Provincial Ministerial Committee
coordinated by MHP and the Parliamentary
Assistant to Ministry of Health Promotion Dr.
    Helena Jaczek

6
  • Two (2) data classes are available for download
from the LIO Warehouse called OTN Trail Segment
and OTN Trailhead. Trail data can be acquired
through an OGDE (Ontario Geospatial Data
Exchange) and an Unrestricted Use License.
  • OTN Trail Segment is a geospatial database of
Ontario's trail network. It contains trail
geometry which describe the characteristics of
a trail, e.g. trail name, length etc.  A trail
segment is a line feature which defines a linear
corridor through the natural or urban
environment. These corridors may be single
segments or form a looping system. One trail
segment is distinguished from another trail
segment within the same trail by having different
    features.
  • OTN Trailhead is a geospatial database of
    Ontario's trailheads.  It contains trailhead
points which describe the characteristics of
a trail, e.g. trail name, length etc.  A
trailhead is a point at which the trail starts. A
    trailhead exists for each trail.

  • Data Collection Integration
  • Agreement signed with the Ontario Trails Council
    (OTC) in 2007
  • OTC using their existing hard copy maps,
pamphlets, etc. and providing the MNR with a
spread sheet of needed trailhead locations
  • OTC is currently providing trail information from
    trail organizations
  • OTC has provided 1000 trail locations and trail
attribute data and continues to collect data in
    2009-10
  • LIO is integrating trailhead data and information
    into the OTN

  • Trail data is verified and trailheads are
    confirmed by trail organization.
  • In addition, we may have to verify the positional
accuracy of the trail through other data sets
such as imagery in order to apply a positional
    accuracy statement to the datasets.

  • LIO currently has 5 GPS units available to trail
groups in order to collect the location of their
trails. The GPS units are highly accurate
(sub-meter) and data can be collected easily with
minimal training through a LIO trail collection
    application.
  • LIO offers training for the GPS units and can
    provide extensive collection criteria/methodologie
    s to interested trail groups.
  • Trail workshops and collection are planned for
    2009!
  • Note LIO does not require trail groups to
    provide
  • highly accurate data (sub-meter) and accepts data
  • collected by other GPS units, for example Garmin
  • or Magellan.
