Exercise Prescription for Diabetes
  • Type of prescription depend on type of diabetes
  • Type I
  • Relatively rare compared to type II
  • Cannot produce insulin must inject
  • Known as insulin dependant diabetes mellitus
    (IDDM)
  • Type II
  • Common (becoming more common each year)
  • Insulin resistance (ineffective at moving glucose
    into the cell)
  • Used to be only in older adults now in all ages
    including children
  • Treatment matrix exercise ? insulin injections

Exercise Prescription for Type I Diabetes
  • The main goal is to reduce the risk of
    cardiovascular disease and increase overall
    fitness.
  • All IDDM clients are considered high risk and
    should see a doctor prior to beginning an
    exercise program.
  • Hypoglycemia is a major concern (insulin
    exercise).

  • Unplanned activities - recommend consuming 20-30
    grams of CHO for each 30 minute of activity.

  • Less likely to experience hypoglycemia from
    exercise compared to Type I
  • Type II clients are just as inclined to have
    medical complications. Ensure your client is
    evaluated by doctor before starting an exercise
    program.

  • Number one goal burn calories (most with type
    II diabetes are obese)
  • 1. Improve sensitivity to insulin
  • 2. Reduce body fat
  • Main focus of prescription should center on
    increasing duration

  • Frequency- Seven days per week
  • Intensity- One the client can maintain for a long
    period of time (light to moderate)
  • Time- One hour
  • Type- Cardiorespiratory then resistance
