Title: Macromedia Fireworks for Beginners

1
Macromedia Fireworks for Beginners
2
What is Fireworks?
  • Fireworks is a graphics creation and editing
    program.
  • It has many uses, e.g. to
  • Edit and manipulate photos
  • Resize images
  • Convert images from one format to another
  • Create collages from multiple sources
  • It is especially useful for working on graphics
that will be used on web pages.

3
Basics
  • The Fireworks screen is set up into various areas
    which Macromedia call panels
  • You can make the panel show or hide its contents
by clicking on the panel name
  • If you want to remove all the panels, hit F4
  • Hit F4 again to bring the panels back

4
Click here to show or hide panel contents
5
Property Inspector
  • One of the most important parts of the screen is
the property inspector at the bottom.
  • This lets you modify aspects of the currently
    selected tool or object

6
Bitmaps
  • A bitmap graphic is a picture made up of dots
    called pixels (picture elements).
  • Due to the high resolution of computer screens it
is often hard to make out individual pixels, but
when zoomed in, you can make out the pixels
    fairly easily.

How to create bitmaps
  • Some of the ways bitmaps can be created
  • Drawn dot by dot by hand in painting packages.
  • Assembled from other bitmaps in editing software
    (e.g. Paintshop Pro, Photoshop)
  • The output of scans or digital cameras.
  • Created by specialist modelling or rendering
    software

9
Vector graphics
  • Vector graphics (sometimes called object oriented
graphics) are treated as collections of lines
    rather than individual dots.
  • They are made up of points, with lines in between
    them
  • Their advantage is that resizing them does not
    cause a loss of quality.
  • Examples of vector graphics are clipart, CAD
    drawings, and fonts.

Creating Vector Graphics
  • Some of the ways vector graphics can be created
  • Using a dedicated drawing package, e.g. Adobe
    Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand
  • Using a CAD program, e.g. AutoCad
  • Using the drawing tools in Word, Publisher or
    PowerPoint.

14
Bitmaps and Vectors in Fireworks
  • Fireworks is unusual because you can work with
    vectors and bitmaps
  • You need to be aware of which type you are
working with as some tools only work with
bitmaps, and some only with vectors
  • There are also differences when you are selecting
    and modifying objects
  • bitmaps are selected as a whole region
  • Individual parts of vectors can be selected

15
Layers
  • An important concept with Fireworks is that of
    layers.
  • Imagine layers as several sheets of see through
plastic that you can draw on.
  • We lay the sheets on top of each other to build
    up the final image.
  • Each layer is independent of the others, so we
can make changes without disturbing what is on
    the other layers.

17
Order of Layers
  • The order of the layers determine which objects
    are in front of which
  • The layer at the top of the list in the layers
panel will be above all other layers
  • The layer at the bottom of the list will be below
    all the other layers

18
Layers Panel
  • Objects within a layer are also ordered, the 1st
appears on top of everything else within the
    layer
  • The layer can have its opacity changed by
clicking on the control in the top left hand
    corner.
  • Each layer can be given a name

19
Saving
  • Fireworks file format is called PNG, and you
should save in this format if you ever want to
    edit the graphic again.
  • To save the graphic so it can be used in a
another program you need to choose a format to
    export
  • GIF for animated simple shapes or icons
  • JPEG for images with photos or scans
  • TIFF for print documents

20
Export
  • Choose the file type and settings in the
    optimization panel
  • Most common will be JPEG
  • The 8, 24 or 32 refers to how many colours can
be used. 8 means only 256 colours.
  • Adjust the quality according to what it is to be
    used for
  • Web page images dont have to be very high
quality, but need to be small
  • Use the Export menu item from the File menu, and
check the save as type box is set to Images
    only

21
Plenary
  • Fireworks is a powerful way to create and edit
    bitmap or vector graphics
  • There are a huge number of features not covered
in this lesson, experiment when you have time
  • CTRL-Z will undo your changes if you dont like
    the results of your experimentation!
