  • Major trickster
  • Representative spirit of actual ravens
  • Depicted as culture hero figure
  • Creator of human beings
  • Most prominent figures of the Haida, Nootka, and
    Tsimshian Tribes
  • Had the power to change at will to animal forms
    or to that of a human being

Ravens Great Adventure
  • Raven took the form of an old man to walk through
    a forest
  • After a while, Raven felt hungry
  • Came to the edge of the forest near a village on
    the beach
  • Many people were fishing for halibut
  • He dived into the sea and swam to the spot where
    the fishermen dangled their hooks
  • Raven ate all their bait
  • Ravens jaw got caught on a hook and it broke off
  • Fishermen took his jaw to the chiefs
  • Magically, raven put his jaw back on and flew away

Raven and the First Haida Men

  • Saw an extraordinary clamshell at his feet
  • Sticking out from it were many tiny human beings
  • Raven persuaded them to leave the shell to join
    him in his wonderful world
  • Eventually emerged from the partly open giant
    clamshell to become the first Haida

Thunderbird Story
  • Monstrous whale on killing spree
  • Whale depriving the people of meat and oil
  • Thunderbird watched as the people were starving
  • It plunged into ocean and seized whale
  • Eventually lifted whale out of ocean and dropped
    it on land
