variables locales (precipitación, temperatura,
fenómenos extremos, frecuencia o intensidad de
huracanes, etc).
Modulación de la Oscilación Cuasi Bienal (QBO) en
campos globales (temperatura, viento meridional,
vertical, altura de la tropopausa,
etc.) Aplicación de métodos avanzados

10Combinación de líneas(UPO, UCM, IANIGLA)
Escasez datos instrumentales (series largas y
(1895-1996)
Sólo se puede calibrar la reconstrucción con
datos instrumentales entre 1961 y 1976
12Calibration
- Occurrence of precipitation in the Central Andes
is mainly related to - Presence of a trough in the subtropical jet
stream over the area - Low pressure systems
- Currently, we have tools to look for these
patterns, thus testing if the expected signal is
found for the snow days for a longer period than
the original calibration - NCEP-NCAR provides reliable atmospheric data
since 1958 in the Southern hemisphere
While it is not possible to perform a calibration
of a precipitation series, the analysis of the
atmospheric anomalies related to the
reconstruction provides an exigent test of
consistency
13Desplazamientos en el chorro
Anomaly in the jet stream during snow days (grey)
relative to the average jet (black)
1958-1996 Subtropical jet northward displaced and
significantly stronger during the reconstructed
snow days
An opposite change in the polar front jet is also
evidenced

15Patrones de circulación
The anomaly pattern is clearly similar to the
wave-number 3 Pacific South American mode
triggered by the ENSO
Anomalous SLP (JJA) related to positive ENSO
events (figure from Karoly (1989)
Anomalous 1000-hPa geopotential (JAS) related to
snow events

Niño-Southern Oscillation Events. J. Climate, 2,

16Chorro-circulaciones en la baja troposfera

During precipitation days, the advection related
to the 1000 hPa geopotential dipole is clearly
related to the observed displacement in the jet
stream.
It is interesting to note that the anomaly in the
jet stream is rather confined to the area closer
to South America and does not seem to propagate
eastward.
17An Antarctic teleconnection?
The snow events in the Central Argentinean Andes
thus appears related to a dipole of SLP with low
pressure over the precipitation area and a
defined high pressure center next to the
Antarctic Peninsula
Signal in the ice extent around the Antarctic
peninsula?
Anomalous warm advection
Anomalous cold advection
Rayner et al. (2003) have published a monthly
series of the ice extent around Antarctica since
1973

18An Antarctic teleconnection?
Autumn
Winter
The anomalous advection related to precipitation
modifies the rate of development of the Ice Sheet
during its formation (autumn) but it is not
related to its maximum extension (not significant
signals in winter)
19Validation
- The reconstructed series shows the expected
relation to atmospheric disturbances. - This procedure adds confidence to the goodness of
the reconstruction for a period significantly
longer than the original 15-year calibration
years. - Therefore, the homogeneity of the series relies
on - No changes in the language
- Expected anomalies in the jet
- Expended anomalies in the SLP
- Related (new) anomalies in the Antarctic Ice
- Comparison with instrumental precipitation series
