Common Foot Problems
Would you date someone with these feet?

2
A. Common Arch Issues
  • Cavus Foot
  • high arch

3
  • Pes Planus flat foot

4
Footprints of Arch Disorders
Cavus Normal Arch
Pes Planus
5
B. Disorders of the Foot
Usually result from some kind of genetic or
developmental abnormality- not necessarily
sports related but are sometimes treated
therapeutically as if they are
6
Corn
  • Caused by thickening of skin tissue
  • Calluses of Dead Skin
  • MOI- Frequent rubbing of the skin on coarse
    surfaces

7
Sesamoiditis
  • Sesamoids are bones beneath the first metatarsal-
    Big toe
  • Often referred to as the balls of your feet
  • MOI Tendons can swell due to overuse and
    constant impact

8
Hallux Rigidus
  • Very closely related to Turf Toe
  • Caused by swelling of the MTP Joint of Big Toe
  • Causes a stiffening and loss of motion of Big Toe!

9
Osteochondritis Dissecans
  • Loss of Blood Flow causes deterioration of bone
tissue and or cartilage of the joint between
    talus and tibia and fibula!

10
Mortons Foot/Toe (NOT MORTONs Neuroma)
short first metatarsalCauses second toe to be
longer than big toe
11
Hallux Valgus A prominence of the 1st
metatarsal head due to a lateral shift of the big
toeBUNION

12

13
Bunionette prominence at lateral aspect of 5th
toe

14
Claw Toes hyperextension of the MP joint and a
hyperflexion of the IP joints
15
Hammertoes flexion of distal IP joint resulting
in pressure on the nail and the end of the toe
16
Comparison of Claw Toe to Hammertoe!
17
Common Injuries of the Foot(Or not so Common!)
Diagnosis Doctors?
18
Turf Toe
  • A sprain of the metatarsophalangeal joint (MP) of
the big toe, usually as a result of a sudden
    hyperextension

19
Turf Toe Injury and Treatment

20
Cause and Treatment of Turf Toe
21
Sesamoiditis
  • Inflammation of the sesamoid bones under the ball
    of the foot
  • A sesamoid bone is a small, round bone formed in
a tendon where it passes over a joint

22
Stress Fractures
  • An incomplete break in a bone occurring after
    prolonged, repetitive exercise

23
Jones Fracture
  • A stress fracture at the base of the 5th
    metatarsal
  • (Pinkie toe!)
  • Most common metatarsal fracture
  • 1902 Sir Robert Jones

24
Jones Fracture X-Rays

25
  • Lisfranc Fracture
  • Fracture and dislocation of the joints of the
    Midfoot
  • Arch on the top of foot fracture
  • (Remember Chien Ming Wang Yankees Fans?)

26
Location of the Lisfranc Complex
27
  • Snowboarders Fracture-

Fracture of the lateral section of the Talus
where it meets the calcaneus Often misdiagnosed
as a lateral ankle sprain! Caused by a twisting
motion of the ankle while foot is held in place
by bindings
28
X-Ray of Fractured Talus
  • 15 times more
  • likely to happen to
  • snowboarders than
  • any other portion of
  • the population

29
  • Stone Bruise
  • Bruise to pad of heel
  • Caused by hard impact on a pointed object
    (Like a Stone)

30
Plantar Fascia Strain(plantar fasciitis)
  • A strain of the plantar fascia, a band of
connective tissue that fans out from heel to
    metatarsal heads

31
Mortons Neuroma
  • Inflammation of nerve between the 3rd and 4th
    metatarsals
  • 1845 - Durlacher

32
Plantar Warts
  • Skin growths on the sole
  • of the feet caused by the
  • human papillomavirus
  • (HPV)
  • Treatment Salicylic acid,
  • duct tape, freezing

33
Blisters
  • Fluid buildup between skin layers caused by
    friction
  • Prevention proper shoe size, keep feet dry,
change socks frequently, apply lubrication or
    protection to hot spots
  • Care Cover and lubricate
  • Should I pop it?
