Why think of knowledge villages in the Indian
Context?
  • Over 600,000 villages are home to 816 million
    persons (over 70 population)
  • Urbanization creating enormous pressure on
    resources due to perpetual migration
  • People failing to migrate have to suffer due to
    loss of livelihood opportunities in villages
  • Villages require physical, electronic and
    knowledge connectivity

Current Scenario
  • A variety of initiatives have emerged
  • Government, IT Companies, NGOs and International
    Agencies are collaborating in specific projects
  • Low literacy high IT infrastructure cost,
    particularly the last mile connectivity
  • Need for dynamic information/ knowledge on
    meteorological marketing factors in easily
    understood forms

Mission 2007 Every Village a Knowledge Centre!
  • Catering to knowledge needs at bottom of the
    pyramid
  • Set up a knowledge centre in every village
  • Two virtual academicians in every village to
    serve as torchbearers of knowledge
  • Developing locale-specific and need-based content
    to promote knowledge intensive farming practices

  • Making thousands of villages dynamic,
    knowledge-creating and sharing societies at a
    local level is much more complex challenge
    compared to creating large resource-intensive
    knowledge cities
