• History
• Introduced as a remedy by Dr. Browne anno 1751.
• It was used as one ingredient of a poisonous
  mixture known as testament poeder (succession
  powder!).
• In the Amazons an infusion of the root poured in
  a bath was used as a tranquillizer and a
  somniferous tonic.
• Via the Dutch Antilles (Curacao) it was brought
  to Europe as a vermifuge, hence the second name
  anthelmia.
• The name Spigelia is a tribute to the Flemish
  anatomist and botanist Adriaan Van Der Spieghel
  (in Latin Andreas Spigelius) (1578-1625)
