What is Censorship?

• During the war, the government wanted to make
  sure people in England stayed positive and calm
• To do this, they made sure that they didnt tell
  people back home, anything that would worry them,
  or make them think they were losing the war.
• Censoring something, is changing it or stopping
  it so that people dont see the whole picture

What??

• For example, if a newspaper was going to print a
  picture of a German soldier killing an English
  soldier, the government would stop them from
  doing this.
• Alternatively they might print the picture and
  change the headline to something like This
  picture shows the only English soldier to get
  killed in the battle

What will you be doing?

• Your job is to get into groups and pretend that
  you are all working for the government home
  office. You will be supplied with a series of
  photos which are due to be published in National
  Newspapers.
• Your job is to decide which ones you will allow
  to be printed and which ones you will block.

What next?

• In your books, you need to explain for each photo
  you have blocked, why you are blocking it, and
  what is not suitable about it.
• Then, you need to invent a headline for each
  photo that you are allowing through, and make
  your headline sound good so that people who read
  the newspaper are cheered up by it.
