Title: Key Stage One What do teachers have to assess

1
Key Stage OneWhat do teachers have to assess?
  • English, mathematics and science
  • To be finalised by July 2nd 2010
  • Tests and tasks should be administered to all
eligible children who are working above L1 in
    reading, writing and mathematics
  • Tests from 2007 or 2009 can be used
  • Tests can be carried out at any time during the
academic year, but children are not to be tested
more than once during the year
  • Teacher Assessment is the main focus for
  • KS1 assessment and is carried out as part of
    teaching and learning

2
English
  • Separate levels for reading, writing, and
speaking and listening are entered into the
    schools management system.
  • For reading and writing level 2 will need to be
    subdivided into 2C, 2B, or 2A.

3
Mathematics
  • Collect information about each attainment target
  • Number, which includes handling data, accounts
for more than half of the performance
  • Using and applying and Shape, Space and Measure
    have equal importance
  • An overall level for mathematics
  • Overall Level 2 judgements should be graded 2C,
    2B or 2A

4
Science
  • A level for each attainment target in science
  • Individual attainments are entered from which an
    overall level is automatically calculated
  • Weightings
  • Scientific enquiry 3
  • Life processes and living things 1
  • Materials and their properties 1
  • Physical process 1

5
P Scales
  • Schools will need to record the achievement of
pupils with SEN using P levels if they are
    working below level 1.
  • P scales are not used for children with EAL
unless they have an identified SEN
  • P scales will be recorded in English, Mathematics
    and Science
  • P1 P3 are common across all subjects. If a child
is working at these levels separate levels for
the assessed elements of English and Maths are
    not appropriate
  • For a child working at P4 P8 then the relevant
    separate levels are recorded
  • For science a simple level from P1i P8 is
    recorded
  • ARA for further information

6
If the school is unable to make an assessment
  • Long periods of absence A
  • Recently arrived in the school, with no data from
    previous establishment A
  • Recently arrived from abroad who does not speak
English, for reading, writing speaking and
    listening W
  • Disapplied from maths and science D

7
Disapplication
  • Children who are not physically able to write and
can only dictate to an amanuensis should not have
a teacher assessment for writing and should be
    recorded as D
  • If a child is disapplied the school should write
a report explaining why, this should be sent to
the childs parents/guardians, the chair of
    governors and the LA
  • A copy should be placed in the childs records
using the form Notification of disapplication
    from teacher assessment available at
    www.naa.org.uk/tests

8
Working above Level 1 unable to access tests
  • Some children, for example those with a physical
disability, may be unable to access the tests
  • Children should not be reported as D, but should
be assessed on work completed throughout the year
  • The Headteacher makes the final decision after
    discussion with the childs parents/guardians,
    teachers, educational psychologists, medical
    officers, etc
  • Schools should write a report using the form
Notification of a child working at the level of
the Key stage 1 tasks or test but unable to
    access them available at www.naa.org.uk/tests

9

administering or marking tests or tasks, or
