What is required on a food label?
  • Foods name
  • Foods weight
  • Company name and address
  • that manufactures, packages,
  • or distributes the food
  • A description of the product that may include
    something about its taste, health claims,
    suggestions on how to serve the food, recipes,
    etc.
  • Cooking instructions
  • Nutrition Facts - found on most food labels

Food's Name
  • This is also known as the STATEMENT OF IDENTITY
  • The name should be located on the principal
    display panel, or PDP, which is the portion of
    the package that is most likely to be seen by the
    person buying the product.

Food's Weight
  • The amount of the product that the container
    holds is also known as the NET QUANTITY
    STATEMENT
  • This should also be located on the principal
    display panel.

NOTE The ingredients in the package are also
listed by weight. The earlier it is listed, the
more abundant it is in the product.

Name and address
This should be located on the information
panel.
  • Food labels must list
  • Name and address of the manufacturer, packer or
    distributor. Unless the name given is the actual
    manufacturer, it must be accompanied by a
    qualifying phrase which states the firm's
    relation to the product, e.g., "manufactured for"
    or "distributed by."
  • Street address if the firm name and address are
    not listed in a current city directory or
    telephone book
  • City or town
  • State (or country, if outside the United States)
    and
  • ZIP code (or mailing code used in countries other
    than the United States).

    use the product rather than the way it might
    normally be used.

  • The following is an example of an actual label
    with cooking instructions.
