Title: CCCTrans and the CSU

1
CCCTrans and the CSU
  • October 16,2007
  • Jim Blackburn

2
Some Context
  • For CY 06-07- CSU campuses enrolled 54,391 CCC
    Transfers
  • For 06-07- CSU recd 187,196 CCC transfer
    applications
  • Most CCC transfers to CSU have attended more than
    one CC

3
What do CSU campuses do with CCC transcripts?
  • Evaluate for admissions purposes
  • Varying degrees of automation
  • Evaluate for course equivalencies
  • Varying degrees of automation
  • Upload to degree audit (some do they all should)
  • Share electronic image of transcript with other
    parts of campus
  • Post to Permanent record

4
Current practices re CCC transcripts in CSU
  • Some EDI
  • A lot of optical scanning and storage
  • Significant use of OCR technology
  • beaucoup trouble, but still better than paper

5
Worst CSU case and next case
  • Still awash in paper
  • CSU admissions still only centralized on the
very front end, i.e. apps upload to campus only
  • EDI is current goal
  • XML seems likely to be the next big thing

6
Some Pros re CCCTrans
  • Pros
  • More successful than our last system venture in
    EDI (circa 1995)
  • Outsources something that would be expensive to
do locally, e.g. a lot of electronic handshakes
  • CSU campuses can pull CCC records

7
Some Cons re CCCTrans
  • Arguably over-engineered from the CSUs
    perspective
  • Probably more cost effective for some campuses
    than others
  • Fullerton, SD, LB, SF may receive 10K CCC
transcripts annually (probably several tens of
    thousands)
  • CMA may receive 100

8
Possible Scenarios
  • Try to expand current list of trading partners
  • Develop regional partnerships, e.g. Inland
Empire, Bay Area, Central Valley, etc
  • Campuses will make their own decisions and pay as
    we go

9
Low Tech Questions and Comments
  • Jim is 60 years old and knows that computers run
    on something called electricity
