• Begin to ally themselves for further protection

• When one goes to war, they all go to war

• Can cause internal conflict

• Countries act in their own best interests
• Leads to crisis in the Balkans

• Area in SE Europe ruled by Ottoman Empire and
  Austria-Hungary
• A lot of different ethnic groups
• Unite and call themselves the Yugoslavs
• Pressure for independence
• First to gain independence were the Serbs
• Create Serbia
• Austria-Hungary annex Slavic region called Bosnia
• Puts them at odds w/Serbians

• Will increase rivalries and hatred toward one

• June 1914 Heir to Austria-Hungary throne
  Francis Ferdinand comes to Bosnian capital
  Sarajevo
• 19-yr-old Gavrilo Princip, member of nationalist
  terrorist group The Black Hand, assassinates him
• Serbian officials knew of the plan
• Hoped it would start war
