2
The Parts of the Clock
  • The clock is what we use to tell time. Before we
start learning to tell time, we should know the
parts of the clock. We call the front of the
clock the face and the two parts that move
around it are called the hands.

3
The Hour Hand
  • The hour hand is the shorter of the two hands on
    the clock.
  • The hour hand points to what hour it is in the
day or night. Since there are 12 hours on the
clock and 24 hours in a day, we know that the
hour hand must go around the face of the clock
    twice a day.
  • 24 / 12 2 times a day

4
The Minute
  • The circle is divided into 12 parts. Each of
    those parts is 5 minutes.
  • So if there are 12 five minute parts on the clock
there are 60 minutes in an hour.
  • 12 x 5 60 minutes

5
The Half Hour
  • When the minute hand reaches the 6 on the bottom
of the clock, it is on the half hour.
  • Since an hour is 60 minutes, a half hour is 30
    minutes.
  • 60 / 2 30 minutes

6
The Quarter Hour
  • When the minute hand reaches the 3, it is a
    quarter hour.
  • 60 / 4 15 minutes
  • The 3 is 3 sets of 5 minutes
  • 3 x 5 15 minutes
  • See how it works?

7
The Digital Clock
  • The digital clock is the clock that shows the
time with the hour first and then the amount of
minutes it is after the hour shown.
  • If the clock read 215, then the time is 15
    minutes after 2 oclock.

8
Night and Day
  • The hands on the clock go around the face of the
clock 2 complete times in one day.
  • So how do you know if the time is night or day?
  • a.m. means that is before midday or in the
    morning
  • p.m means that is after midday or in the
    afternoon or evening
